The gun is unloaded, but two shotgun shells sit snug in the pocket of her cutoff denim shorts. The former resident of California and Arizona, who's owned a small farm here the past three years, says she's taking no chances. I'm scared to death of these people around here, Kaupert says. We're getting outta here as soon as we make sure the goats are moved and safe. Kaupert known in Douglas County and on Internet chat rooms as the Goat Lady had 69 of her estimated 80 animals removed by Sheriff Gary Koop on June 17 to settle a $851 debt to a local hay dealer. Acting on a court order, Koop supervised the removal of the goats, which were to be sold at auction to pay Kauperts debt to Harold and Lyndell Lakey.

No other historical personage, excepting Napoleon, has been studied and written about as much as our 16th President. And the list of Lincoln publications continues to grow at a steady pace. We have always felt the collector should have an attainable goal; that is, a selective list of books which would offer what is considered to be the most authoritative and best written works on the subject. But the myriad of choices presents a profound problem for serious readers and collectors. Where does one begin assembling a basic Lincoln library? To address this problem, we offer the following list of 161 titles pertaining to Lincoln's life and times. [For those who ask, we chose 161 because that is what number the essential list came to.] We don't expect everyone to agree with our choices, but this list does represent the consensus of leading authorities in the field of Lincoln scholarship. But we accept responsibility for the final choice. This list has not been prepared in catalogue form. Extractions: by Anne Matheson Henderson To those of us who have grown up in Winnipeg the names "Point Douglas" and "The Forks" should be familiar but to the newcomer they are for the most part unknown. "East of Main" to the average resident means, if anything, the C.P.R. and C.N.R. and in between warehouses, wholesales, small industrial plants, with here and there a very old house, and through the whole district a network of tracks, bridges, subways and overpasses. The junction of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers had been known throughout the fur trade as "The Forks" for many years before the North West Company came there to build Fort Gibraltar, and the Hudson's Bay Company their small stores depot. Point Douglas came into existence only after the arrival of the Lord Selkirk Settlers, marking as it did the first settlement in Western Canada. Although more than sixty years would pass before Winnipeg became a city, its foundation was firmly set in the growth and development of the narrow strip of land along the west bank of the Red River, north from The Forks to Point Douglas and the Scotch settlement beyond. Some years prior to the coming of the Selkirk Settlers, the Hudson's Bay Company had built a stores depot on the east side of the Red River in the neighborhood of to-day's St. Boniface Hospital, and it was there that Governor Miles Macdonell landed with the men of the 1811 working party on the 30
