The cattle feed, from Pennsylvania farmers, is part of Phase 2 of Hay Lift 2000 to help area farmers make it through the winter. Lock has 36 head of cattle and said it should last 4-5 days on his farm. By Gretchen Fowler The Independent ST. PAUL Neither cold nor snow nor slick roads could keep Phase 2 of Hay Lift 2000 from reaching St. Paul's Howard County Fairgrounds Monday morning. Starting around 9 a.m., volunteers and drivers worked to unload four semis of hay donated to area ranchers while women from St. Paul's First Presbyterian Church prepared breakfast for everyone. Coordinated by the Rev. Dale Sallans from Central City's First Presbyterian Church and Bill Sisco from the Presbyterian Church in St. Paul, Monday's drop provided 12 area ranchers with the gift of 11 bales each. Hay-Lift 2000 is a mission project started by the Rev. Douglas Kelly of the Presbyterian Church in Spring Run, Pa. The idea was for Pennsylvania ranchers to share their overabundance of hay with Nebraska ranchers who've run short due to last year's drought.

Extractions: Edgar Washburns Farm Journal December 25, 1923 March 31, 1925 Compiled and Edited by Patricia Washburn Long December 1998 EDITORS NOTE This journal kept by my great grandfather Edgar Washburn (1861-1946) was found in the possessions of my aunt Sara Washburn Vincent after her death in 1996. The time period covered is December 24, 1923 to March 31, 1925 (one full book). Entries in the journal provide valuable historical insights into life on the Washburn farm outside Summertown, Tennessee. Because of severe arthritis, Edgar Washburn was confined to a chair most of the time. Thus, much of the journal is from a passive perspective. In almost every entry he writes of the daily activities of his wife Maggie Osborn Washburn and son Ross Washburn, who lived with his wife Nettie on the farm. Edgar also used the journal to record the time worked by hired farm workers. Since Edgar was basically immobile, most of the activities he mentions himself being involved in relate to hand work, such as cutting rags for rugs, churning, sorting potatoes, etc. Maggie was a midwife and tended many of the sick in the community. Edgar periodically wrote of Maggie being gone to a neighbors to sit with a sick person. Ross was an expert mechanic who maintained the family car, neighbors cars and the farm machinery.

Stan Shabaz, Washington, DC. Eyewitness to Israeli Crimes Dear Editor: My fellow Jew, Dr. Douglas Miller, indulges in a stream of mean-spirited generalities in his letter in the October Washington Report hoping to intimidate non-Jews into silence about Israel's crimes. Conspicuously absent in his long tirade are facts. I challenge him to refute a few I have gathered in reports dated July and August from people who spent three weeks in Israel's occupied territories, sponsored by a number of organizations including New Jewish Agenda, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Riverside Church, and New England Catholic Peace Fellowship as part of the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee's "Eyewitness Israel" program. *"I interviewed a 9-year-old boy after he was caught by soldiers. They stomped on him until they managed to break his pelvis. I saw a couple of girls whose eyes were put out by rubber bullets which are basically steel slugs with rubber coatings and fired at close range. It's a common practice." -Robert Anderson, Rainbow Community Center, Pittssburgh, PA.
