Extractions: Ive only been gardening for a year or so, but in that short time Ive read more than my share of gardening books and advice online. Mr. Solomons book is a great inspiration he provides no-nonsense, practical, honest advice about how to plan for and expect the best from your garden. After reading this, I finally feel mentally equipped to get the most from my backyard. However, Ill agree with another reviewer: this book has a definite "homestead" bent which doesnt apply well to us city folk. While the self-sufficiency angle is interesting and doesnt lead to any irrelevant tangents, it would be nice for a chapter or two on planning and management for small (less than 200 square feet) gardens. Maybe in the next edition?

Extractions: Two months later, in June, just as my garden began needing water, my so-called 15-gallon-per-minute well began to falter, yielding less and less with each passing week. By August it delivered about 3 gallons per minute. Fortunately, I wasn't faced with a completely dry well or one that had shrunk to below 1 gallon per minute, as I soon discovered many of my neighbors were cursed with. Three gallons per minute won't supply a fan nozzle or even a common impulse sprinkler, but I could still sustain my big raised-bed garden by watering all night, five or six nights a week, with a single, 2-1/2 gallon-per-minute sprinkler that I moved from place to place. I had repeatedly read that gardening in raised beds was the most productive vegetable growing method, required the least work, and was the most water-efficient system ever known. So, without adequate irrigation, I would have concluded that food self-sufficiency on my homestead was not possible. In late September of that first year, I could still run that single sprinkler. What a relief not to have invested every last cent in land that couldn't feed us.

Extractions: Return to the Northwestern Gardening Forum Post a Follow-Up Posted by PDXGreg OR 8 ( My Page ) on Wed, Mar 24, 04 at 12:33 I'm going to be growing tomatoes this year for the first time in years. Last time I grew tomatoes, I just planted whatever starts I'd found at the garden center and don't remember what they were or how they did. This time, I'd like to plant the best varieties for our area (I'm in Portland). I noticed a discusssion of tomatoes for the NW on the Tomatoes forum, but it was waaaay over my head. It looks like some very serious tomato people contributing there, who probably have a lot more growing space and time than I do. Also, it seemed to focus on starting from seed. Here's what I need: *I don't have the space, or time to start from seed. I need varieties that can be purchased as starts at a garden center or nursery, which I know will greatly limit my choices. Help with where to find them would be great. *I want a cherry type tomato, a sauce (roma-type) tomato, an excellent slicing (hamburger) tomato, and maybe something more colorful and interesting (a purple or yellow heirloom type). *I'm looking for the most flavorful and prolific varieties available for our cool nights and shorter season. I like the idea on indeterminate varieties, as I can stake them and they'll keep producing over a long period. Good disease resisistance is important also.

All materials came from the local building supply, except the roll of greenhouse glazing plastic. The 25 foot dome was built of 2x2s cut from 2x4s. The dome stood five or six years in Idaho without any maintenance. I used 10 50 gallon drums filled with water and painted black for heat storage, and had tomatoes on the vine in December, though they had stopped growing whe...

Extractions: At last! An instruction journal for us Organic Nerds! And in plain, understandable terminology. When it is advertised as covering 50 years of gardening (the right way) experience, you can take that to the bank! It was a revelation to read that some of the concepts I had been using for years, actually have merit. I knew they had worked for me, but it is always nice to be validated. If you can only purchase one gardening manual, this is the one to buy. It covers everything and because the methods are tried and true, you can feel confident following Ogdens suggestions. I can remember when, years ago, neighbors thought me barmy for directly composting kitchen waste(sans meat products). I am vindicated!

Extractions: If Ole and Maitri Ersson had their way, Portland might one day change its nickname from "The Rose City" to "The Ruby Chard City." Not that this Southeast Portland couple has anything against flowers. Their postage stamp-sized front yard bursts with color from the 15 or so varieties of flowers Maitri plants every spring. But every other available square inch of space on their 40-by-100-foot lot is devoted to growing food. Aside from staples such as grains and potatoes, Ole and Maitri are able to produce most of their food for their vegetarian family of five. Along with growing vegetables in the backyard, the Erssons harvest raspberries from the cane hedge bordering their property and have strawberry plants growing in their driveway. They have even grown pumpkins on the roof of their house in five-gallon pails. Ole and Maitri like to imagine what it would be like if every household in Portland produced at least a portion of its own vegetables. They envision a city where everyone on a block works together to grow food, sharing labor, know-how, equipment and harvests. They'd like to see neighborhood organics depots where leaves, wood chips and other valuable organic material could be stored and distributed to local gardeners for composting and mulching. They wish that the city's network of community gardens could be expanded to provide more gardening opportunities to apartment dwellers and others without their own land.
