Organic Seeds From Territorial Seed Catalog Territorial organic seeds has a 44acre research farm in which we rotate a 4 to 6 acre trial, evaluating thousands of vegetable, flower, and herb organic varieties every year. Territorial's history in organic agriculture runs very the most popular vegetable gardening book ever sold in the Northwest, Growing organic vegetables west of the Cascades http://www.territorial-seed.com/organic/organic_seeds.html
Extractions: An organic history of Territorial Seed Company Territorial's history in organic agriculture runs very deep within our company. From the very first seed catalog that was published in 1979, Territorial's founder, Steve Solomon, stressed the benefits of growing organically. The cultural information for each vegetable section was packed with information on how to use soil amendments such as rock phosphate, blood meal, bone meal, cotton seed meal, and the like. Territorial's Complete Organic Fertilizer Recipe became famous in the Northwest, a simple and practical approach to helping gardeners become more independent and self-sufficient for their own good tasting fresh-from-the-garden-food, without chemicals! At the time, outside of Robert Rodale's publications, this type of information was scarce, and no other seed companies at that time were giving organics much consideration. Territorial's message about organic gardening connected with enthusiastic gardeners looking for alternatives to chemicals, and this created demand for those organic materials mentioned above. In addition to founding Territorial Seed Company, Steve also wrote probably the most popular vegetable gardening book ever sold in the Northwest, Growing Organic Vegetables West of the Cascades. And although Steve's involvement in Oregon Tilth was for a short time, he does share the honor of being a founding organizer and member of Oregon Tilth. Steve did not enjoy operating a business as much as he loved writing, so he decided to sell Territorial. Julie and I had been customers of Territorial from day one, and were real vocal supporters of the company. We became acquainted with Steve, and our life goals crossed paths with Steve's desire to sell, and our thoughts on organics and business ethics matched.

Extractions: by Robert Plamondon, robert@plamondon.com I've written reviews for my favorite poultry and small-scale farming books. All of these are well worth reading. With a few exceptions (due to heart-stopping cover prices), all are worth buying. For your convenience, I've provided links to Amazon.com for those books that Amazon has heard of, in case you feel like ordering them, or if you want to read other people's reviews. I buy a lot of books from Amazon. They're my favorite bookseller. For out-of-print books, I've provided links to Abebooks.com, which is where I buy most of my hard-to-find books. It is becoming increasingly hard to find classic, out-of-print poultry books. Hobbyists and small-scale farmers are rediscovering them, and the upshot is that these books are harder to find and more expensive than they used to be. I started Norton Creek Press largely to make old classics available again, and I will be bringing out additional titles as time permits. In-Print Poultry Books

Extractions: Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast: Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and Alaska Average customer rating: I loved this book! I knew very little about growing vegetables and needed step by step instructions and confidence. I even ordered the lettuce from Territorial Seed Co. on the last page and they grew well! If you live in the Northwest and want to grow vegies organically and as a bonus, harvest year round, and don't want to spend alot of money on a book, buy this book! I've only been gardening for a year or so, but in that short time I've read more than my share of gardening books and advice online. Mr. Solomon's book is a great inspiration he provides no-nonsense, practical, honest advice about how to plan for and expect the best from your garden. After reading this, I finally feel mentally equipped to get the most from my backyard. However, I'll agree with another reviewer: this book has a definite "homestead" bent which doesn't apply well to us city folk. While the self-sufficiency angle is interesting and doesn't lead to any irrelevant tangents, it would be nice for a chapter or two on planning and management for small (less than 200 square feet) gardens. Maybe in the next edition? The book is well-organized, and the writing is pleasant and easy to follow. If you live in western Oregon, Washington, or BC, then this book is a must-read.
