At all events we may safely conclude that he was not in full Holy orders, for in January, 1397-8, when he was about seventy years of age, he married Agnes Groundolf, and it might be inferred from some passages in his works that she was not his first wife. At that time he was living in the priory of St. Mary Overy (now St. Saviour), Southwark, to which he was a generous benefactor, and he continued to reside there after his marriage. About 1400 he became blind. He died in October, 1408, and was buried in the chapel of St. John the Baptist in St. Mary Overy. His tomb is still to be seen. His effigy lies under a canopy, with the head resting on a pillow formed of three folio volumes inscribed with the titles of his three best-known works, namely, the "Speculum Meditantis", the "Vox Clamantis", and the "Confessio Amantis." aab aab bba bba.

Gothic Language John Gower (1330?1408?) Encyclopædia Orbis Latini. Medieval English poet in the tradition of courtly love and moral allegory, contemporary http://www.orbilat.com/Encyclopaedia/G/Gower_John.html
Extractions: Medieval English poet in the tradition of courtly love and moral allegory, contemporary and friend of Geoffrey Chaucer. Though very popular in his days, after the 16th century he was nearly forgotten, and interest in him did not revive until the middle of the 20th century. It is supposed that Gower was of Kentish origin, though his family may have come from Yorkshire, and he was clearly a man of some wealth. Allusions in his poetry and other documents, however, indicate that he knew London well and was probably a court official. In 1397, living as a layman in the priory of St. Mary Overie, Southwark, London, Gower married Agnes Groundolf, who survived him. In 1400 Gower described himself as "senex et cecus" ("old and blind"), and on Oct. 24, 1408, his will was proved; he left bequests to the Southwark priory, where he is buried. Gower's three major works are in French, English, and Latin, and he also wrote a series of French balades intended for the English court. The Speculum meditantis

Extractions: This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. My warmest thanks go to a colleague of mine, Dr. Masahiro Komatsu (Graduate School of Languages and Cultures, Nagoya University), who was kind enough to write the C++ program.
