Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930) Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman (18521930). Mary Wilkins, later Mary WilkinsFreeman was born in Randolph, Massachusetts on October 31, 1852. http://instructional1.calstatela.edu/mdetlof/ENGL453/new_page_2.htm
Extractions: Mary Eleanor Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930) At the age of 50, she reluctantly married Dr. Charles Freeman after a ten-year, and on her part often reluctant, romance. She had begun to write novels in the 1890s, and while these did not meet with the same success as her stories, she continued to be praised for her insightful depictions of New England characters and settings. Her marriage brought only brief happiness. By 1918 Charles Freeman had become addicted to alcohol and drugs. In 1920 Mary Freeman had him committed to a state hospital. By 1922 she was legally separated from him. Her reputation had declined in the 1920s, yet today she is widely admired as an innovative writer, particularly for her insightful psychological treatment of women's lives. Freeman was a prolific writer, completing twenty-two volumes of short stories, fourteen novels, three plays, three books of poetry, and eight collections for children. She died of a heart attack in 1930. Special Note: Her reputation went into decline for much of the mid-1920s, for her "feminine" subjects which were often dismissed by critics as simply unimportant in the context of larger world events. More recent scholars have argued convincingly for the importance of Freeman's work, which often features spinster heroines. Especially in some of her more well-known ghost stories powerfully illustrative of the claim that many female writers of the time used the ghost story as a means of examining, indirectly, many of the social, personal, and economic pressures which often silenced or devalued women and their concerns.
