Extractions: AMERICAN PHILOSOPHY The history of philosophy in America begins with Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), a pupil of Samuel Johnson (1696-1772), who, during Berkeley's sojourn at Rhode Island, visited and corresponded with the distinguished advocate of immaterialism. Edwards was, however, influenced more by Locke than by Berkeley. In his principal work, which is devoted to the discussion of the freedom of the will, he maintains that freedom, in the sense of self-determining power, is a contradiction, that true freedom (the quality of human action which raises it to the dignity of virtue) is a disposition of the heart, and that with this idea of freedom the foreknowledge and providence of God are easily reconciled. Edwards' Works were edited by S. E. Dwight (New York, 1844). The disciples of Edwards, chief among whom were Jonathan Edwards, the Younger (1745-1801), and Timothy Dwight (17521817), confined their attention for the most part to the problems of freedom of the will, the nature of virtue, and the principles of the moral government of the universe; they also endeavored to supply a rational basis for the Calvinistic system of theology. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) deserves mention among those who helped to stimulate an interest in philosophical speculation during the years that preceded the Revolution. The practical morality and the sagacious reflections of "Poor Richard" are Franklin's title to distinction as the "Socrates of America."

In this he is credited with discovery of the "reversing layer." Astronomy / Physics William Healey Dall (1845-1927) published Alaska and Its Resources (Boston). General or Miscellaneous / Geography and Cartography Standard Oil Company was established by John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937). In 1972, Standard Oil (New Jersey) took the name Exxon Corporation. General or Miscellaneous / OrganizationsIndustry John Wesley Powell (1834-1902) was put in charge of a Congressionally enacted survey that in 1876 became known as the Geographical and Geological Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region. Powell continued at the head until it was ended in 1879. For a time associated with the Smithsonian Institution, in 1874 the Survey was transferred to the Department of Interior. GovernmentFederal / Geology Congress effectively assigned to the Army's Signal Service the task of providing meteorological information and weather forecasting, the beginnings of a national weather service, with part of its mission being aid to agriculture and business. At the time, the Signal Service was under the charge of Colonel Albert J. Myer (1829-1880). In 1871, Cleveland Abbe (1838-1916) became associated with the enterprise as a civilian meteorologist.

Contemporary with these the popular classics of our literature there were many authors of lesser rank whose names belong in the record of our literary development. Some of these may be designated as the minor essayists, novelists, and poets of their generation, while some are our foremost representatives in other fields of literary effort as yet not touched upon. First in this enumeration are the historical writers who constitute an important group among the authors of the century. The most brilliant of the number were Prescott, Motley, and Parkman. These three men were thoroughly representative of the traditional New England aristocracy of culture. They were all residents of Boston and graduates of Harvard College. A peculiar coincidence is found in the fact that both Prescott and Parkman suffered from the affliction of partial blindness, and that it was only in spite of extraordinary difficulty, by the exercise of consummate patience, that each was successful in his achievement.
