Extractions: Finding Aid Crosthwaite, Charles Haukes Todd , fonds. 1884-1888. 12.5 cm of textual records. Sir Charles Haukes Todd Crosthwaite (1835-1915), a career civil servant, was born at Donnybrook in Ireland on 5 December 1835. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and St. John's College, Oxford. He joined the Indian service in 1857. He served as chief commissioner of Burma from March 1887 until 1890. While in Burma, he cleared the province of rebels and set down the roots of British administration. In 1893 he became lieutenant-governor of the North-Western Provinces and Oudh. He wrote several books in retirement, including The Pacification of Burma (1912). He died on 28 May 1915 at Long Acre, Shamley Green, Surrey. The fonds consists mainly of his correspondence with Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple Blackwood (1826-1902), 1st Marquis of Dufferin and Ava. Blackwood, a diplomat and administrator, served as Governor-General of India from December 1884 until 1888. He was awarded a marquisate for his service in India. Crosthwaite's letters are mainly holograph copies, presumably done by his secretary. There is other correspondence in the fonds. Title based on content of the fonds.

(Patrick) Craufurd Bruce (1748-1820), one of the sons of Sir Michael Bruce, 6th Bart., served in the East India Company, and was later a banker in London. His papers consist mainly of letters to him about his son Michael, including many letters from Michael on his travels (MSS. Eng. c. 5740-3), letters from Lady Hester Stanhope (MS. Eng. c. 5744), and some domestic papers, including his notes on the character and behaviour of his servants, 1797-1820 (MS. Eng. d. 2834). The most substantial portion of the papers is that of Michael Bruce (1787-1861). He travelled for several years in Europe and the Middle East (where he spent some time in the company of Lady Hester Stanhope). On his way back to England in 1816 he was tried and imprisoned in Paris, for his part in the escape of Count Lavallette from France. In 1818 he married Marianne Parker, the widow of Sir Peter Parker (d. 1814). Bruce's father died in 1820, leaving the family in financial difficulties. Bruce was called to the Bar in 1826, and was briefly, 1830-1, Member of Parliament for Ilchester.
