Extractions: General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964 "You couldn't shrug your shoulders at Douglas MacArthur," observes historian David McCullough. "There was nothing bland about him, nothing passive about him, nothing dull about him. There's no question about his patriotism, there's no question about his courage, and there's no question, it seems to me, about his importance as one of the protagonist of the 20th century." Douglas MacArthur lived his entire life, from cradle to grave, in the United States Army. He spent his early years in remote sections of New Mexico , where his father, Arthur MacArthur Jr., commanded an infantry company charged with protecting settlers and railroad workers from the Indian "menace." As a teenager, Arthur had served with distinction in the Union Army, eventually earning the Congressional Medal of Honor for leading a courageous assault up Missionary Ridge in Tennessee . But he soon discovered that life in the post-Civil War U.S. Army held little of the glamour he knew during the war. These years were even harder for Douglas ' mother, Mary

The sequel to Douglas's Mindhunter provides much improved organization of information regarding his profiling techniques (still don't get it confused as a text book, see the Crime Classification Manual below). also less time is used for his biographical information, and thus more profiling is described. This book will be of particular interest to canadian's due to its several chapters on Douglas's work for canadian authorities. THIS BOOK IS AVAILABLE IN: HARDCOVER for $17.50 (30% off)

Clearwater's municipal administration is patterned after the Council-Manager form of government. This system of joint government combines the strong political leadership of elected officials (the City Council ) with the strong management skills of a professional City Manager who prepares an annual budget for the Council's action, serves as the Council's chief advisor, recruits and hires the government's staff and sees to it that the Council's programs and policies are carried out. The Council also hires the City Attorney who is the full time legal advisor for the City.

While there, he was a student of Vincent D'Indy, Charles Tournemire and Nadia Boulanger. Moore went to Cleveland in 1921 as Director of Music at the Cleveland Museum of Art, during which he studied with Ernest Bloch at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and performed in plays at the Cleveland Playhouse. Four Museum Pieces , Moore's first serious work (about four items in the Cleveland Art Museum's collection), in its orchestrated version, was first performed by the Cleveland Orchestra with Moore conducting. Also in 1926, Moore was invited to join the music faculty at Columbia University, where he remained until his retirement in 1962. Moore was Chairman of the Columbia Dept. of Music from 1940 to 1962, as well as president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters from 1953 to 1956, director of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) from 1957 to 1960, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1951 for his opera

Extractions: his book list has only been partially revised. It is, however, complete as far as books by Tolkien himself are concerned (except for Morgoth's Ring , Vol X of the HoMe series, which is due out "any day now" in the U.S.). This version also contains some expanded comments on the HoMe series, which people have been asking about. The fully revised list will contain many more secondary sources and much other book-related information. email@example.com The following list is complete with respect to books containing material written by J.R.R. Tolkien as of September 1993. It is (intentionally) not complete with respect to secondary and biographical sources, but does contain 1) those which I consider best and 2) those which are generally highly regarded (overlapping but not identical groups). This list is not limited to books in print; indeed, a number of the best are out of print. There is a lengthy introductory note on the state of the accompanying maps as currently presented by the publishers, which I urge you to read if you or anyone you know are about to obtain LotR (Tolkien himself considered the maps to be of primary importance). [The beginning of the actual book listings is marked with a double line of "="'s for skipping ahead purposes.] No attempt has been made to include in this list either Tolkien's academic journal articles or poems that were published in various literary magazines. Extractions: Occupation: Actor, Producer, Screenwriter Though Fairbanks was cut from the same swashbuckling cloth as his silent era start father, Douglas Fairbanks Sr, he never made as great an impression amongst the movie going public. Perhaps because he made a greater variety of films so wasn't forever cast as one "type". With acting in his blood, his mother (Fairbanks Sr's first wife) Anna Beth Sully was an actor too (his stepmother, "America's Sweetheart", Mary Pickford), it was perhaps inevitable that he would enter the profession and this he did, starting out as a juvenile lead at the age of 13. He went on to become a star in his own right, winning aclaim for such movies as Gunga Din . His private left similary hit the headlines, his first wife was Joan Crawford and he counted members of the British royal family amongst his friends. The Prisoner of Zenda (1937). I'm a big fan of Ronald Colman movies anyway, but even I must admit that Fairbanks was a complete scene stealer with his portrayal of Rupert of Hentzau. Mischievous, dashing, laughing away; he is a joy to watch and this is without a doubt my favourite performance of his.
