Extractions: Correspondence Project Professor Malcolm Cook (Department of French) is leading a team of six scholars to produce the first-ever critical edition of the correspondence of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (1737-1814). The inventory of the correspondence is nearing completion and can be found and consulted on the web pages of the Voltaire Foundation in Oxford. The correspondence will be produced as an electronic edition. The Centre was set up in 2002 as a forum for collaboration in nineteenth-century studies across the School's portfolio of five languages. The expertise of more than a dozen nineteenth-century specialists, including postgraduates, is brought together in a series of round tables and lectures , to which colleagues from other institutions are also invited. The Centre's distinctiveness lies in its European, cross-cultural focus and in its interdisciplinary interests. These include the relationship between writing and the visual arts, art criticism, science, encyclopedism and publishing. One of CENCS's main concerns is the digitalisation of the nineteenth-century heritage. Its two current core projects, the Russian Visual Arts and the Gutzkow Edition Project , and also the smaller-scale Corinna Project , are devoted to this purpose.
