Extractions: Her full name was Margery Louise Allingham. She was born in London and attended The Perse High School for Girls in Cambridge, before returning to London and the Polytechnic for Speech-Training. Her father was the author, H. J. Allingham, and also the editor of 'The New London Journal', to which she contributed articles and Sexton Blake stories. In 1928 she married Philip Youngman Carter, who collaborated with her and designed the jackets for many of her books. They lived on the edge of the Essex Marshes. Her famous fictional detective was Albert Campion The White Cottage Mystery. The Crime At Black Dudley.

He was educated at the Methodist and Campbell Colleges in Belfast. In 1896 he was apprenticed to his uncle, chief engineer on the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway. In 1899, he became junior assistant engineer on the Londonderry and Strabane Railway. In the following year he was promoted to district engineer. In 1912, he married Mary Bellas Canning. In 1923 he went back to work for the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway. By this time, he was already a published author. In 1925 the first 'Inspector French' novel was published. This hero appeared in another 29 novels. The success of his novels enabled him to give up his job and become a full-time writer. He and his wife moved from Northern Ireland to Blackheath, Surrey. In the early Fifties, Crofts became seriously ill but continued to work on what turned out to be his final novel. Extractions: This is a shame as Crofts was a key pioneer of the genre, in fact his main series character, Inspector French, is widely credited as being the first series Police Officer to feature as the main investigative character. The Penchant at the time being for amateur sleuths such as Poirot, Marple and Wimsey etc with the Police playing a more sedentary role. Crofts was born in 1879 in Ireland, the son of a British army Doctor. After a religious upbringing and education Crofts went on to become a railway engineer, a job he stuck with for most of his working life. But it was not until recovering from a serious illness, in 1919, that Crofts dipped his toe in to the literary pool that was to become the 'Golden Age of Crime Fiction'.
