Extractions: Recollections of Bradwell Grove Holwell and Burford by Norman G James Preface Acknowledgements Start Bradwell Grove ... Life at Manor Farm Click on Photos for larger versions PREFACE Back to the Top These pages describe the life at Bradwell Grove, now the Wild Life Park, the nearby village of Holwell, and Burford some 70 years ago - not, you may think, a very long time, but long enough for the very great social and agricultural changes since the First World War to have altered entirely the rural way of life as described here, a greater change than perhaps in any other comparable period. Norman James, the author of these pages, was born in Holwell in 1907 and has lived there ever since. As a young man he worked as garden boy at Filkins for Sir Stafford Cripps, the great Socialist Chancellor, and subsequently at Bradwell Grove as gardener to Colonel Heyworth-Savage. His memory and perceptive eye have recorded what country life was like 70 years ago in these parts, but they give a picture too of what must have happened in numerous other great houses and villages throughout the country. Holwell was a hamlet without a pub and only a small village shop, now gone, and life revolved around the church, the school and the squire, but it supported a community of nearly a hundred people who depended for work on the big house and a tenant farmer with some 500 acres. Eleven men who gave their lives in the First World War have their names on the village War Memorial, but now only about 15 people live here during the week, augmented at weekends by people from London who come to enjoy the peace and quiet which still exists in Holwell.

While all of the books listed may not be in print, many may be available from your local library or used book store. A very good on-line source for books that still are in print is . You may order many of the books that are in print by clicking on this symbol next to title of the book listed below. The best source for used books on the web is Book Site.. Jackie Lewin, Curator of History for the St. Joseph Museum , has provided the following analysis for researchers. Thanks for her contribution. The most complete books on the Pony Express are by and Roy Bloss . However, neither are annotated which is frustrating for a researcher. Settle does have a good bibliography. From Settle's papers he did have footnotes prepared, but the editors chose not to use them. They wanted to make the book more popular with the general reader. Settle was not pleased with that. Settle wrote in the mid-1950s and was the first to use the Waddell Collection at the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Bloss wrote for the Pony Express Centennial. NOTE : Settle also wrote The Story of the Pony Express which was published in England. This the same book as

Extractions: Record Round the Isle of Wight Row From Ryde Rowing Club Early on the morning of Saturday, 19th May, 1999 The Ryde Rowing Club Ladies Fixed Seat Galley Crew met at Ryde Marina to attempt what is believed to be the first Round the Isle of Wight Row by a Women's Crew. The Ryde Club have a strong tradition of Round the Island Rowing having completed at least nine round the Island rows in their 120 year history and currently hold the record in both fixed seat and sliding-seat coastal fours. The row is 55.2 statute miles and for Ryde Crews traditionally start from Ryde Pier head and is rowed west about - Cowes, the Needles, St. Catherine's, Bembridge - and back to Ryde. The record is seven hours, fifty-four minutes in a Sliding seat boat set in 1995. The fastest time in a fixes seat boat is eight hours, six minutes set in 1965. The Fixed Seat Four Oared Galley was loaned by Pat Sherwin, MBE. - an ex. Southsea Rowing Club boat it is a veteran of the Great River Race. Leaving Ryde Pier Head at 4.00am, still in the dark, the crew were accompanied by a Maltese Fishing launch manned by Club Captain Ian Lennie and Crew Member Tony Hickman who was taking the Video and photographic record of the attempt. The launch "Night Owl" owned and skippered by Tony Richardson also accompanied the Crew as Safety cover. Three and a half hours later, by 7.30am, the crew approached the Needles - 21 miles into the row - which provided a spectacular backdrop for the boat with the Wightlink sponsors flag flying behind in the mild head wind.
