Extractions: B ernard RICK arrived in the Port of New York on May 7, 1870, aboard the S.S. Rhein, along with his parents, Johann Joseph (John) RICK and Anna Catharina (FLATTEN) RICK, and Anna's father, Andreas FLATTEN. While the family was in Colorado, Bernard (Ben) left and was never heard of again. In the year 2002, another researcher located Bernard in the 1900 census in California, so I have been able to add the following: If anyone has any further clues about him, please contact me so I can add the missing information. THE REST OF THE FAMILY: J ohann RICK was born 4 May 1834 in Tyrol (a small province in S.W. Germany, bordered by Switzerland, Italy and France). The language was a mix of all three countries. His ancestors were French Huguenots. He went to Bonn, Germany, where he grew to manhood with scant education. He married Anna Catharina FLATTEN and came to America in 1870 - a seven week journey across the Atlantic. He stayed a short time in New York City, then migrated to Wisconsin. I n the winter of 1879, the family settled near Shelby, Nebraska. In 1885, they went to Goodland, Kansas. They dug wells for water, built a sod house, plowed 640 acres and planted it to wheat. It was one of the first large wheat fields in western Kansas. In the fall of 1890, Johann shipped 13 rail cars full of wheat to Chicago. The money ($27,000) was sent to the bank in Goodland. When he returned home, the bank had closed and everything he had worked for, for five years, was gone. This broke his spirit and he never recovered from it. The drought and panic of 1893 came next, and the farm was taken for the $800 mortgage. In March of 1895, they moved to Peyton, El Paso County, CO. At about this time, Johann left to live with his daughter Margaret, (Married to William Irwin), near Albin, Laramie County, WY. In 1900, Anna divorced Johann.

It is a very long time since we have had any opportunity of communicating with each other directly, though I have been enabled to find traces of you and your labors, from time to time, which was more, I think, than you have been able to do of your old friend; for I am not so public a personage as yourself. "Your call upon Mrs. Stowe, and our dear, sainted president, and your labors connected with the army, and the Freedmen's Bureau, gave you a publicity that enabled me to observe you at your old vocation of helping on and doing good to your fellow-creatures, both physically and mentally. I was much pleased with Mrs. Stowe's enthusiasm over you. You really almost received your apotheosis from her. She proposed, I think, that you should have a statue and symbolize our American Sibyl.
