Extractions: RIVERSIDE CEMETERY Sterling, Whiteside Co IL Whiteside County Township Map Partial Listing Riverside Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in this area. Riverside Cemeter is actually a composite of several original cemeteries. The oldest areas of Riverside were originally known as the Old Township Cemetery and the Free Burial Ground; these areas have since been named the North Township and South Township Sections. The firsr recorded burial was in the early 1800's. A one year old child of the Martin family was interred in what is now known as the South Township Section. On February 16, 1865, the Sterling Cemetery Association was organized and secured approximately fifty acres at the east end of Third street. John D. Arey, a county surveyor of the late 1800's, mapped and recorded the cemetery. In 1870, the Odd Fellows Cemetery secured approximately two acres at the east end of Second Street. On April 1, 1955, the Sterling Cemetery Association was sold to the Sterling Lodge Number 174 I.O.O.F. On April 5, 1955, the cemetery property of the Sterling Lodge Number 174 I.O.O.F. was sold to the Town of Sterling. The Town of Sterling cemetery property has since been renamed Riverside Cemetery.

Extractions: SOUTH WHITLEY CEMETERY The South Whitley cemetery was first used as a family burial place. Henry Parrett was the first person buried there in August 1845. It first contained 4 acres. Another family burial plot nearby was private and the first person buried was John Collin in 1845. It contained 3 acres. After several burials in each, they joined and became known as the South Whitley Cemetery. In 1965, Marjorie Kite surveyed the cemetery and produced a cemetery book with over 4000 names, a monumental task. Beginning in 1998 the Whitley County Genealogical Society, which was already working on other Whitley County cemeteries, began updating the 1965 cemetery book for the South Whitley Cemetery. Those involved in the count included Elizabeth (Betty) Yann, Beverley Henley, Julia and Michael Hayes. By mid 1999 there were over 6000 people buried at the cemetery. Jeanette Brown spent countless hours reading hand written sheets and entering them into a computer program which will be available on the Internet. Special thanks must be given to Ed Myers, the caretaker at the cemetery, who assisted by opening the records when help was needed. Ed was always ready to help in any way we asked. Thanks are also extended to Cleveland Township Trustee Roland King and former trustee Jim Anderson who were ready to assist in any way.
