Extractions: Despite her conservative, aristocratic upbringing, Kate O'Flaherty Chopin became one of the most powerful and controversial writers of her time. In her stories, sketches, and novels, she not only captured the local color of Louisiana but also boldly explored the role of women in society. Kate O'Flaherty was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of a wealthy businessman. When she was 19, she married Oscar Chopin, a Louisiana cotton trader. The couple settled in New Orleans, where they lived for ten years before moving to a plantation in rural northwestern Louisiana. In 1883, Chopin's husband died, leaving her to raise her six children on her own. With her children, she returned to St. Louis and began devoting much of her energy to writing. Influenced by American Regionalists such as Sarah Orne Jewett, Chopin's fascination of the mixture of cultures in Louisiana shows in her writing. Like most of her other works, her first novel, At Fault (1880), was set in a small Louisiana town inhabited by Creoles, descendants of the original French and Spanish settlers, and Cajuns, descendants of French Canadian settlers. Through her vivid descriptions and use of dialect, Chopin captured the local color of the region. In her stories, published in

Extractions: show links: authors texts terms none ... Glossary American novelist and short story writer Born Katherine O'Flaherty in St Louis, Kate Chopin's early life was coloured by a strict religious Catholic education. She learned to speak, read and write fluent French and read the works of Zola, Flaubert, George Sand and Maupassant in their original language. Chopin married at the age of twenty and moved to New Orleans, where her husband was a cotton broker. Following his death of swamp fever in 1884, she returned to St Louis and began composing sketches, in part for diversion and in part to support her young family of six children. Chopin's writing was inspired by her life in Louisiana and by her love of French fiction. Her technique was to write spontaneously, relying on stream of consciousness. She wrote quickly, rarely revising, producing three novels, 150 stories and numerous reviews and critical pieces within a decade. Her short pieces were published in 'Century' and 'Harper's' magazines. Chopin's first novel, 'At Fault' (1890), deals with the controversial subjects of female alcoholism and divorce. Her most famous work 'The Awakening' (1899), originally entitled 'A Solitary Soul', is set in New Orleans and the Gulf Isles, and traces the sexual and psychological awakening of a young wife and mother, Edna Pontellier. On its release, the novel's sympathetic portrayal of adultery was condemned by critics as sordid, vulgar and immoral. It has since been reclaimed as an important work of feminist literature - an enlightened depiction of the frustrated 'new woman' of the late nineteenth century, who comes to consciousness so that her formerly repressed 'essential self' blossoms. Alas, Edna's "seductive, never ceasing, clamouring, murmuring" desire cannot be fulfilled within the bounds of her society. Unashamed and remorseless, she chooses self-annihilation rather than submit to subjugation by convention.

Extractions: Library Kate Chopin Dictionary Kate Chopin was born Catherine O'Flaherty on July 12, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the daughter of an immigrant Irishman, Thomas O'Flaherty, and a French Creole mother, Eliza Faris. Kate was their youngest child. In 1855 Thomas O'Flaherty died suddenly from a work-related railroad accident. Kate lacked male role models in her life after her father died. She was raised by three generations of women, including her maternal great-grandmother, Madame Victoria Verdon Charleville, who instructed Kate in music lessons, French lessons (she only spoke to Kate in French), and storytelling. Additionally, Kate attended the prestigious Sacred Heart Academy, which promoted intelligence and independent thinking: this helped Kate begin her lifelong love of reading and writing. When Kate she was eleven, Madame Charleville died, and Kate's half-brother George was killed while fighting in the Civil War for the Confederate side. Kate grew up during the Civil War, and this caused her to be separated from the one friend she had made at the Sacred Heart Academy, Kitty Garesche. St. Louis was a pro-North city, and because the Greshe's were slave owners, they were forced to move. After the war, Kitty returned, and she and Kate were friends until Kitty entered Sacred Heart as a nun. There Kate married Oscar Chopin, the son of a wealthy cotton-growing family in Louisiana, in June, 1870. Their union produced six children (five boys and two girls). Oscar was French Catholic, as was Kate.

Of Creole-Irish descent, she married (1870) a Louisiana businessman and lived with him in Natchitoches parish and New Orleans. In these places she acquired an intimate knowledge of Creole and Cajun life, upon which she was to draw in many of her stories. After her husband's death in 1883, she returned with their six children to St. Louis and there began to write. Two collections of tales, Bayou Folk (1894) and A Night in Acadie (1897), earned her a reputation as a local colorist, but her novel The Awakening (1899) caused a storm of criticism because of its treatment of feminine sexuality. In depicting objectively a woman's confused groping toward self-understanding and self-acceptance, Chopin seemed to threaten the mores of her time although she did not explicitly attack them. Largely ignored for the next 60 years, her work is now praised for its literary merit as well as for its remarkable independence of mind and feeling. See her complete works, ed. by P. Seyersted (2 vol., 1969) and ed. by S. M. Gilbert (2002); her private papers, ed. by E. Toth et al. (1998); T. Bonner, Jr., The Kate Chopin Companion (1988); biographies by E. Toth (1988 and 1999).
