    Extractions: T ogether with Charles Wakefield Cadman and Deems Taylor, John Alden Carpenter was considered one of the foremost "modern" composers of the 1920's and 30's. Born into an affluent Chicago shipping family, Carpenter traced his ancestry back to the Pilgrims. His musical studies began with his mother, a passionate amateur singer, and continued with John Knowles Paine at Harvard and in later life with Elgar in Rome and Bernard Ziehn in Chicago. After his graduation in 1897, he entered the family business, and, like Ives , for the rest of his career worked as an executive by day and a composer in his leisure hours. Unlike Ives (who hurled invectives at Carpenter's early work PERAMBULATOR), however, his music was far-more mainstream and accessible. In 1915 Carpenter became interested in incorporating elements of popular musicTin Pan Alley and jazzinto his works. His 1921 musical pantomime KRAZY KAT, with its dazzling orchestration that influenced Gershwin, enjoyed a great success and resulted in a commission from Russian impresario Serge Diaghilev for an American ballet. Carpenter's resulting composition, SKYSCRAPERS, eventually was premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in 1926, greatly enhancing his reputation as a composer. Until his death in Chicago in 1951, he devoted the rest of his life to creating two symphonies, a violin concerto, several tone poems, and over fifty songs. Carpenter's vocal literature is enlivened by his impeccable taste in poetry, his luxuriant melodic inspiration, and his fluid settings of text. His most famous songs included his cycle of Rabindrinath

Caldwell, born in New York, moved to Maine in 1964 and began a 25-year career in 1965 as newspaper columnist for the Portland newspapers , writing about 3,000 columns before retiring in 1991. His home in Damariscotta, called Piper's Bend , was the site of parties for the state's elite, including political leaders, but he also enjoyed the company of artisans, fisherman, and other "regular" people. His 30-foot converted lobster boat, Steer Clear , was recognizable along the Maine coast and he was sometimes stopped for an autograph while cruising. Caldwell wrote several books and articles about Maine, including: "Harvey F. Gamage: Master Ship Builder, South Bristol, Maine" (April 1970; in "Down East," 15 pp.); Enjoying Maine: Lively Stories About People and Places, from the Sea Coast to the North Country...

Sempre in bilico tra produzioni hollywoodiane e cinema indipendente, Carpenter sembra voler dimostrare che andare al cinema può essere divertente anche se non si è spettatori di film a grosso budget. Nei suoi film si spara e si salta per aria, ma molto meno che non in quelli degli studios; nei suoi film ci si spaventa e si sorride, esattamente come in quelli degli studios. Nei suoi film, Carpenter ci presenta sempre personaggi duri, bastardi, che finiscono loro malgrado per trovarsi in situazioni estreme. Nei suoi film recenti abbiamo sempre a che fare con dei veri tamarri! Anno 2176: Marte è stato colonizzato dai terrestri, che ci hanno instaurato una società matriarcale. Un gruppo di poliziotti raggiunge in treno la città mineraria di Shining Canyon per prendere in consegna James "Desolazione" Williams, un pericoloso pluri-omicida in attesa di processo. Quando arrivano in paese, però, gli sbirri non trovano la solita ressa del venerdì sera. Anzi: non c'è proprio nessuno in giro. Nella prigione sono rimasti solo tre o quattro prigionieri, mentre dal soffitto pendono decine di cadaveri decapitati. "Desolazione" Williams è comodamente rinchiuso nella sua cella d'isolamento, ma allora chi diavolo ha combinato questo macello?
