    Extractions: Bishop Joseph Butler (1692-1752): A Brief Introduction Butler's writings are part of a 17th and 18th century effort to find a foundation for morals in something other than appeals to divine will. Butler sought it in nature, particularly human nature. He inherited from the previous century the view of (what we call) psychological egoism found in the writings of Hobbes and his French contemporary, Bernard Mandeville. He also inherited a tradition referred to today as "the British Moralists" who argued for a benevolent picture of human nature. His method is to try to show that self-interest and benevolence are only parts of a larger whole. For Butler, who claims to base his views on the vast bulk of humankind (!), human beings are neither exceptionally self-regarding to the exclusion of benevolence nor exceptionally benevolent to the exclusion of self-interest. What is more, he finds that these motives are not necessarily incompatible and may even reinforce each other. David Hume, in An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals , put the same idea this way: ""[T]here is some benevolence, however small, infused into our bosom; some spark of friendship for humankind; some particle of the dove kneaded into our frame, along with the elements of the wolf and serpent."

Since the time of Plato moral philosophers have been preoccupied with whether human beings are capable of leading virtuous lives. Butler, firmly rooted in Christian tradition, thinks that human nature is adapted to virtue, having been designed by a benevolent God. Mill aims to make his moral philosophy independent of any theology, but still considers whether a secular morality can satisfy our need for ‘grandeur of aspiration’. Nietzsche is contemptuous of traditional thinking about morality. He offers a diagnosis of the acceptance of traditional values which is not at all flattering to either Christian tradition or to the morality commonly espoused by secular moralists like Mill.     Extractions: The rise of natural science called for a new relationship between science and religion The foundations of the new scientific era were laid by Copernicus (1473-1543) and Galileo (1564-1642). Their demonstration that the sun was the center around which the planets revolved implied that humanity and earth were not the center of creation. Sir Isaac Newton (1641-1727) argued that the laws of motion and gravity keep sun and moon, stars and planets in their places. Deeply religious, Newton assumed that God was involved in the created order. Others, however, concluded that there was no need for God to sustain nature or intervene in it. If, as John Locke insisted, true knowledge comes from experience rather than revelation, scientific and philosophical inquiries were no longer under the authority of the church. This in turn called for a new relationship between science and religion. One approach was to subordinate religion to science. This Deism attempted, by reducing Christianity to a rational, moral system. A second approach was to show that religion and science are complementary.
