His prose made widely popular the type of nature essay written by Thoreau. His best-known books are Wake Robin Locusts and Wild Honey Fresh Fields, a travel book (1884); Signs and Seasons (1886); and a volume of poems, Bird and Bough (1906). A growing interest in philosophy and in science is evident in Time and Change The Summit of the Years The Breath of Life (1915), and Accepting the Universe (1922). "The Sage of Slabsides" became the friend of John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, Edison, Ford, and other important people. He traveled to the Pacific coast, the South, the West Indies, Europe, and (with the Harriman expedition) Alaska, recording natural phenomena in simple, expressive prose. See his autobiography

    Extractions: Called the W. Ormiston Roy Collection of John Burroughs, collection honors Roy's grandfather. The elder Roy knew Burroughs and served as a consultant on the landscaping of Burroughs's estate in the Catskills. Many of the books carry inscriptions to Ormiston Roy from Burroughs or from his literary executor Clara Barrus.

    Extractions: "Oom John" Burroughs: Theodore Roosevelt's Naturalist Mentor John Burroughs (1837 - 1921), the Catskill Mountain naturalist, was a longtime friend of Theodore Roosevelt, an important influence on Roosevelt's development as a conservationist, and an occasional guest during the Theodore Roosevelt presidency in the Lincoln bedroom. On Monday, July 23, 2001, author, photographer, and naturalist Edward Kanze will discuss Burrough's life and work and his relationship with the twenty-sixth president in a lecture at the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, New York. Part of the museum's Monday Evening Lecture Series, the presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held in the Conference Building. Monday Evening Lectures are underwritten by the Business Members of the Adirondack Museum. There is no charge for admission. T.R. was an avid reader of Burrough's books on nature and the outdoors, and as a young man, Roosevelt sent the naturalist fan letters. The two met for the first time in 1889, when Roosevelt was thirty. During the three decades that followed, ending with T.R.'s death in 1919, the out-spoken politician-naturalist and the soft-spoken naturalist-poet corresponded frequently. They enjoyed each other's company too, and united for birdwatching expeditions at Sagamore Hill, around the Roosevelt cottage "Pine Knot" in Virginia, and on the White House lawn. In 1903, T.R. and Burroughs made a trip to Yellowstone National Park. This was their first major outing together, and each came away impressed by the intellect and the natural history knowledge of the other.
