A commentary on the discovery of the Southern Route *SR can be read at Southern Route Although my focus is primarily on emigrants to Oregon, the trials and tribulations of the Donner party cannot be ignored. For those who would like to learn more about this segment of history I would encourage you to visit Kristin Johnson's web site at Donner Party Captains of 1846 *1: Capts. Isaac Allen and Elam Brown: on May 14, 1846 started for California with a company composed primarily of the relatives and friends of Isaac Allen and Elam Brown. The company consisted of about 30 wagons, 100 men, plus their women and children. Isaac Allen died on August 27, 1846 on the Humbolt is what is now the state of Nevada. Karl Kiser at KSquared77@aol.com is researching this group and is interested in any information you might have. *2: Capt Joseph C. Submitted on Sat Jan 31 16:12:20 EST 1998 I am attempting to make contact with person's who have, or are researching the VANCE Family in Tennessee! I believe my missing VANCE Line, is one of the Samuel and Agnes (PENQUITE) VANCE sons, who were in Bucks Co, Penn ca 1764. I have only the son James, and he is not the father of our Benjamin Franklin VANCE, who was born in Tenn in 1827, and married in Jan, 1850, in Carthage (Hancock) Illinois to Catherine TANKSLEY of Jackson Co, Tenn. There was an Andrew VANCE, very early, in Hancock Co, Illinois, also not Benjamin's father, and James was in nearby McDonough Co, Illinois. There were many family's from Smith, Jackson, White, Sumner, etc County's, living in Schuyler/Hancock County's, Illinois, in the 1840-1850's.

Extractions: FOREWORD The request to contribute these comments is a welcomed task. I came into this community at the age of five. I grew into manhood here and entered the Neidlinger family clan through the God-given blessing of marriage. This gives me the advantage to impartially observe and gain a clear insight into the characteristics of these people. I have found an abundance of virtue therein. For about forty.five years of my life I have seen them pass across life's stage; from infancy to maturity and some from maturity to the grave. I have learned much from them about the living of life. Many stories of courage, integrity, ingenuity and spiritual strength can be told of them. They could be equaled by very few other families I know. The Salzburgers are known in Chatham and Effingham Counties as an important pioneering element of this nation's foundation. It is very unfortunate that so much knowledge of this has escaped documentation in our state and national history. As far as I know the only existing document that resembles a history of these people is Dr. Peter A. Strobel's book, "The Salzburgers and Their Descendants." Even this admittedly is incomplete and ends with the year 1851. Credit in the research and preparation of this book must go to the original committee, Mrs. Addie Jaudon Neidlinger, Mrs. Julia Heidt Floyd and Mrs. Nina Neidlinger Varnell. Their dreams of printed recognition of the Neidlinger Lineage, their storehouses of knowledge and their diligence are the factors most responsible for this production. I also must express my personal feeling that Mrs. Catherine Davis Schuster must be recognized as having given much in time and talent to its preparation. My wish is that this document will be supplemented and up-dated through as many future years as possible.

Extractions: History: The oldest documented graves in this cemetery date to 1889, three years after the founding of Carson City (later renamed Panhandle), the first town in the county. Among those buried here are Civil War veterans and area pioneer families. Gravestone designs range from simple to elaborate, and the cemetery also contains many unmarked graves. The Panhandle Cemetery has also served people in surrounding communities. Additional land acquisitions have increased the size of the graveyard over the years, and a small chapel was built in 1965.
