Extractions: HAY, EUTROPE, HUGHES My great grandfather was Henry James HAY. His family originated in Scotland but some generations prior to Henry they emigrated to Poland with other scottish families including Garvie and Kedslie (their story is told in a book titled "Agents of Change: Scots in Poland"). Henry James was a black sheep in the family. My understanding from the book, Victorian marriage and other certificates is that, after emigrating to Australia Henry became Professor of Music at Melbourne University. He married Maria EUTROPE, daughter of Fricaud EUTROPE (a French chef) and Sylvia Maria HUGHES. The connection to me then runs through Henry's son Leopold Fricaud HAY (my grandfather) and Frederick Henry James HAY (my father). Apparently Henry was keen on the drink and "went bush". I have lost the trail and cannot find what happened to Henry. Can anyone help with Henry? Also, if anyone has a connection through EUTROPE or HUGHES I would be interested to hear.

Extractions: 25 linear feet, 3 oversize volumes Political and personal papers of a Democratic U.S. congressman from Missouri, 1893-1895 and 1897-1921, and his son, a Democratic U.S. senator from Missouri, 1933-1945. Also includes materials of other family members. Collection contains correspondence, financial and legal documents, journals, photographs, speeches and writings, and clippings and scrapbooks. The Champ and Bennett Champ Clark Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Champ and Kimball Clark on 13 April 1983 (Accession No. 4501). Frances B. Spruce donated additional material on 2 December 1992 (Accession No. 5243). Champ Clark (1850-1921) was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1892. He was defeated in 1894, reelected in 1896, and served until 1921. During his tenure, he was twice elected minority leader, 1907-1909 and 1919-1921 and, from 1911 to 1919, he served as Speaker of the House. Clark was a candidate for the 1912 Democratic presidential nomination, losing to Woodrow Wilson on the eighty-fourth ballot at the national convention. Clark was a supporter of tariff reform and advocated isolationism and creation of a volunteer army prior to and during World War I. Genevieve Bennett (1856-1937) married Champ Clark in 1881 and played an active role in the political careers of both her husband and her son. She also promoted such causes as women's suffrage and progressive labor legislation.

He took a trip around the world in 1884-87 to collect specimens and resided for a period of time in Auckland, New Zealand, and Singapore, where he practiced taxidermy. The journal is a 160-page account of this journey. Adams later prepared a taxidermy exhibit for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Adams's nephew, Clifford Love of Philo, Ill., loaned the journal to the Survey for copying in 1974. ALLEN FAMILY. PAPERS, 1803-1913. .5 cu.ft. According to the recollections of Charles and Robert Allen, descendants of the Allen family, two Allen brothers came to Virginia from Northern Ireland during the mid-eighteenth century. They settled for a time in Virginia, and their descendants later moved to Kentucky. Charles and Robert's grandfather, Joseph, left Kentucky and settled in Indiana. One of Joseph Allen's sons, Artemus Ward Allen, served in the 73rd and in the 149th Ind. Vol. Inf. during the Civil War. Another son, Ezra Fiske Allen, was a teacher in Indiana and became a professor of mathematics at Eastern Illinois State Normal School in Charleston, Ill. Joseph Newton Allen, a third son, was an educator in Kansas. He later became involved with real estate in Indian Territory (Oklahoma). This collection contains papers and correspondence of the Allen family from 1803 to 1913. The correspondence includes five Civil War letters of Artemus Ward Allen and one from G. C. Smith, a doctor with the 43rd Indiana. These letters contain comments on life in the Army, Gens. McClellan and Halleck, and the Emancipation Proclamation. There are also several letters and documents about the educational career of Ezra Fiske Allen as well as letters of Florence and Lucy Allen. The collection also includes letters from Joseph Newton Allen recounting his activities in the Indian Territory. In addition there are legal documents concerning land transactions in Kentucky and Indiana, and a note of Dec. 31, 1844, signed by the heirs of Joseph and Frances Allen regarding the sale of slaves.
