Extractions: by Samuel A. Sizer Guide to Selected Manuscript Collections was compiled in 1976 by Samuel A. Sizer, then Curator of Special Collections in the University of Arkansas Libraries. It contains brief descriptions of 211 collections, including a few that had not been processed at that time. The on line version updates the 1976 Sizer Guide to reflect work done on those collections in the division since then, and entries are integrated into the alphabetical list and the subject lists of electronic finding aids elsewhere on the Special Collections web site. A paper copy of the complete original Guide is available. At present, some manuscript collections in the division are accessible only through typewritten finding aids in the division reading room. However, as time and other resources permit, these are being converted to computer files and published on the Special Collections web site. Meanwhile, researchers should contact the division for further information. A B C D ... Y A] ALEXANDER, HENRY MACMILLAN, 1905-1969.

Bb Colonel Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville, USA. 17961878. The product of a noble French family, he was born on April 11, 1796, in the cathedral town of Evreux, in the province of Normandy. http://www.geocities.com/maulanie2001/bb.html
Extractions: The product of a noble French family, he was born on April 11, 1796, in the cathedral town of Evreux, in the province of Normandy. His father, Nicolas de Bonneville, was a distinguished man of letters who counted among his friends numerous American statesman, including Thomas Paine, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. (According to family legend, young Bonneville was named Benjamin after Benjamin Franklin, who had served as America's ambassador to Paris). His mother, Marguerite Eulalie Brazier, remained faithful to her Catholic convictions in spite of the extreme anticlerical sentiments of the Revolution. In 1802 Nicolas de Bonneville, in an effort to rescue his family from the the Reign of Terror, which had denounced him as an "aristocrat" and had threatened to place him under the blade of the guillotine, sent his wife and young sons to reside in the United States. Soon after arriving in America, the Bonnevilles were invited to stay at Thomas Paine's cottage in Bordertown, New Jersey. Young Benjamin and his brother Thomas became Paine's wards. Both of the boys were educated at boarding schools and by private tutors. Benjamin spent his teenage years living in New York City. After decicing to embark on a career as a soldier, he was admitted (on April 14, 1813) to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. After having had endured three years of harsh military education, Bonneville graduated with the class of 1815 (academic class rankings were not yet noted), and was assigned to serve in the glamorous Corps of Light Artillery.

While searching for furs in the Rocky Mountains in 1824, Bridger became probably the first white person ever to see the Great Salt Lake. He took part in an early expedition that crossed the South Pass of the Rocky Mountains, and he was one of the first white people to see the wonders of the area that became Yellowstone National Park.

He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1815 and entered the army. After gaining experience with the fur trade while serving at frontier posts, Bonneville obtained a leave of absence from the army and in 1832 led an expedition into the Rocky Mountains. Making his base on the Green River in Wyoming, he spent the next four years in fur trading and exploring. Having overstayed his leave from the army, he was dismissed. Captain Bonneville left for the frontier post of Ft. Osage on the Missouri in May 1932, with 110 men. He went by wagon train to save the delay of packing and unpacking horses. Also less horses meant less chance of them getting stole by the Indians. Wagons were also easily defended and provided good protection. There were 20 wagons in all. I.R. Walker and M.S. Cerre were his second in command. He hired several Delaware Indians were hired as hunters. That year, he was going to Pierre's Hole where the trappers redenzvous would be that year. On the way, he made friends with the Kansas Chief White Plume. On July 11, the expedition came to the fork of the Platte river. Though the route of the North Platte was unknown to him he took it because he was headed to the Rocky mountains. Herds of buffalo became more plentiful on this route. They reached the Wind River mountains on July 20.
