Extractions: Home Clark Cochran [ Darrah ] Burns Hollingsworth Page William Thomas Darrah (1815-1892) The Darrah family name probably originated in Scotland and Ireland, and the spelling was and is different in various parts of the world. In Scotland the name Daroch appears to be a branch of the old MacDonald clan. The prefix Mac means "son of" and the clan descends from an old patriarch named Donald, who was the grandson of Somerled, King of the Southern Isles of Scotland in the 12th Century. Meanwhile, not many miles away across the North Channel in Northern Ireland. the family name appears to have started as MacDarragh, derived from MacDubhdara, sometimes shortened to MacDara. The word "Dubh," pronounced "do" or "due," meant "black" in Ireland and it is possible our Darrah forefathers were Black Irish, which might account for the swarthy Arab or Moor on the family crest. There are all kinds of variations in spelling such as Dara, Darragh, Darreagh, Darrah, Darrow, Dorah, Dorrah. etc. Our earliest verified progenitor was Henry Dorrah (sic) who lived ca 1735-1806) in Greene County, PA. Some of his offspring still use the Dorrah spelling to this day. Henry's grandsonmy great great grandfatherchanged to the Darrah spelling at some point. I have recorded most of this story in a book I published in 1995 called Meeting the Elephant: Westward Migration and Settlement of Selected Pioneer Families . It's available at the Library of Congress (Call # CS71.D223 1995), the National Genealogical Society, and the Mormon Library in Salt Lake. Another book on the subject which I used a great deal as a reference in my own work is
