Mary Pickford Theater Film Schedule (Fall 1999) Earl Derr Biggers (18841933) was a popular Saturday Evening Post writer who, duringhis short career, became the first widely known author to create a series http://www.loc.gov/rr/mopic/pickford/fall99.html
Extractions: FALL 1999 Jump to: October November December This fall the Mary Pickford Theater presents a film retrospective in conjunction with the Library of Congress exhibition John Bull and Uncle Sam: Four Centuries of British-American Relations beginning November 15. While the relationship between the United States and the Mother Country are admittedly complex, British and American culture and ideas are constantly interwoven through film. As the two primary English-speaking countries, there has been a ready exchange of ideas and story formulas between the respective film industries. Our series (which will continue in on our spring calendar next year) illustrates this fruitful crosscurrent with films and television programming drawn from the holdings of the Library of Congress and the National Film and Television Archive and British Film Institute in London. RESERVATIONS may be made by phone, beginning one week before any given show. Call (202) 707-5677 during business hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm). Reserved seats must be claimed at least 10 minutes before showtime, after which standbys will be admitted to unclaimed seats. All programs are free, but seating is limited to 64 seats. The Mary Pickford Theater is located on the third floor of the Library of Congress Madison building If you would like to subscribe to our program guide you can submit your name and mailing address either by calling the Pickford Theater reservation line at (202) 707-5677 (24 hours a day) or by sending e-mail to

Extractions: add to wishlist Sound interesting? Other customers who bought this also picked up: Synopsis Earl Derr Biggers (1884-1933) is best remembered as the creator of the Chinese detective Charlie Chan, whose long-running series of exploits (portrayed in the movies first by Warner Oland and later Sidney Toler) made him a world-famous character from the 1930s to the 1950s. At the height of the series, Charlie Chan was nearly on par with Sherlock Holmes... and he spawned such Oriental detective imitators as Mr. Moto and Mr. Wong. Biggers had always been interested in mystery fiction, but his interest in Hawaii clearly stems from a 1919 vacation in Honolulu. While there, he read a newspaper article on a Chinese detective named Chang Apana. Apana would become the model for Charlie Chan in Biggers' 1925 novel

Extractions: EARL DERR BIGGERS: Charlie Chan Is Born Any study of Charlie Chan must begin with author Earl Derr Biggers, who brought the exploits of the great detective to life in 1925. Biggers stated on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of his graduation from Harvard University in 1932, "I am quite sure that I never intended to travel the road of the mystery writer. Nor did I deliberately choose to have in the seat at my side, his life forever entangled with mine, a bland and moon-faced Chinese. Yet here I am, and with me Charlie Chan. Thank heaven he is amiable, philosophicala good companion. For I know now that he and I must travel the rest of the journey together." Earl Derr Biggers was born in Warren, Ohio on August 24, 1884. Years later, while attending Harvard University, Biggers showed little passion for the classics, preferring instead writers such as Rudyard Kipling and Richard Harding Davis. Following his graduation from Harvard in 1907, he worked briefly for the 'Cleveland Plain Dealer' and at Bobbs-Merrill publishers. By 1908, Biggers was hired at the 'Boston Traveler' to write a daily humor column. Soon, however, he became that paper's drama critic. It was at this time that he met Elanor Ladd, who would later become his wife and who would have a marked influence in his writing.
