Extractions: the three martini mysteries... Try this series, and really listen to some of the lines in the movies. You might be surprised at just how entertaining they are. Did you know? The "thin man" referred to in the title is not Nick Charles but the missing scientist that Nick and Nora are hunting for. Also in this series: The third in the series, this is my favorite. The Whistling Detective Series Great one-liners and physical humor Red Skelton has some great one-liners in this series and these movies showcase the physical humor that America saw on his television shows sometime later. This series came out around 1940. This is a have-a-good-time mystery to lighten any boring or stormy afternoon.

To Bob he dedicated Keeper of the Keys Biggers attended Harvard University. While still in college, and a member of the 'Advocate' and the 'Lampoon,' he also sold short stories to popular magazines. He graduated in 1907 at the age of 23. Biggers worked very briefly at the Cleveland Plain Dealer and at the publishing firm of Bobbs-Merrill before settling in as a drama critic for the Boston Traveller.

Extractions: Through Time School's almost out, but don't forget all that reading you've got to do for fall. No NOT Rocket Science for Dummies . I have some plans for my hammock this summer and they include checking in with some of those mystery authors I've always meant to spend some time as well as renewing my acquaintance with many of my other favorites. And there's something so orderly and academically correct about starting at the beginning of the genre and reading my way through to the present. Whether you are a long time reader of the genre or recently arrived, there's often the sense that you have missed something along the way. Are you well-versed in golden-age reading? Have you missed a classic hard-boiled dick along the way? Tie up your hammock, get out a big pile of books, put out your prettiest arsenic scented hanky and strap on your silencers. And let's all agree to put aside quadratic equations until at least the middle of July. Unless they're going to help solve the case.
Literate Five-O, Part 5 His chronicles were written by British writer Earl Derr Biggers (18841933) andthe subject of motion pictures in the 1940s starring Warner Oland as Charlie http://home.comcast.net/~waxtadpole/lit5.htm
Extractions: Literate Five-O, part 5 Termination with Extreme Prejudice (#171) As indicated by British spy Harry Wells (Dan O'Herlihy), the titlephrase is spy-ese for "eliminate," or, in plainer English, "kill." It's a typically foggy government euphemism which is used in an attempt to make the action seem less distasteful than it is. McGarrett has a more direct term for it: "Murder." Also in this episode, Wells cautions his henchman Sloane (John Hunt) against underestimating McGarrett, saying the Five-O chief has "a lean and hungry look." So Julius Caesar says of Cassius in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar , Act I, scene ii: Let me have men about me that are fat;/ Sleek-headed men, and such as sleep o' nights./ Yond Cassius has a lean and hungry look;/ He thinks too much; such men are dangerous. Target? The Lady (#172) Mob hit man Wally Hatch (Andrew Prine) says to his accomplice Kimo, as they're following damsel-in-distress Susan Bradshaw (Susan Dey), "Easy, Kimo sabe. Don't want to spook her." This is a combination of the Hawaiian name Kimo (equivalent to the English James or Jimmy) with The Lone Ranger's nickname Kemo Sabe, bestowed by his faithful Indian companion Tonto. Supposedly it meant "good scout," but countless jokes have given other meanings. Sing a Song of Suspense (#176) Being questioned in McGarrett's office, singer/witness-on-the-run Chelsea Merriman (Lois Nettleton) says of her experience in being nabbed by mobsters and taken to Five-O, "For a while there, I thought I might end up in an octopus garden." This refers to a song by The Beatles called "Octopus's Garden," which is on their Abbey Road album. She means she was afraid she might end up under the ocean, probably wearing cement overshoes.
