He began his literary career with contributions to The Yellow Book, a quarterly magazine. A prominent figure in London life, Beerbohm knew everybody and caricatured everybody, emphasizing the eccentricities of British social, political, and literary personalities in a long series of witty drawings. He was knighted in 1939. Except for his one novel, Zuleika Dobson (1911), a satire on life at the University of Oxford, Beerbohm's books are mainly compilations of his periodical and newspaper articles. He was the drama critic of the Saturday Review from 1898 to 1912, succeeding George Bernard Shaw in the post. Important among these writings are the collections of essays
