Extractions: The following are taken from several Union County newspapers. Until the later part of the 20th century the Union County newspapers placed obituaries randomly throughout the paper. Older obits are a far cry from the sterile and impersonal ones we find in our modern-day papers. The obits from the nineteenth century dates are in RED ; obits in the twentieth century are in Blue. Some obits are abbreviated, but all genealogical information remains. I have highlighted some information for better reference. I will be adding obits as I can. Anyone wishing to help with this project please contact me at UCGenWeb@hotmail.com From 30 March 1854 paper: MARRIAGES and DEATHS We can see no just reason why a minister or a magistrate, who marries a couple, should not forward the notice of the marriage to the press for publication. It strikes me as that nothing short of that, is treating the parties with becoming respect, and we hope in future these courtesies will be remembered. Again, we think it is not in keeping with due respect for the deceased, or surviving relatives not the have a death notice in a public journal, and we hope hereafter that some friend or neighbor will be kind enough to attend to Obituary notices for the Herald, when they are not near enough for our notice or knowledge. It is a convenient way of communicating that kind of information to distant relatives and friends.

I opted for the name Skull for this cemetery because that is what we found therea human skull perched atop an opened grave. The cemetery, which has apparently been abandoned for some years, is VERY overgrown and has suffered EXTREME vandalism. Several graves were open, markers were broken and overturned, and the remains of one lady are clearly visible through a slab that had part of a headstone through it, apparently used to break open the slab! :( Most death dates, where markers were intact (sort of) were in the 1950ssurely someone is still living who can identify this cemetery and its occupants -Lisa R.
