Thelema Lodge Calendar For January 1999 Ev Ecclesiastical Gnosticism, Red Flame volume 2 in Berkeley, ca 1995. Marguerite deNavarre (14921549) and the Pentameron of Giambattista Basile (1575-1632). http://www.billheidrick.com/tlc1999/tlc0199.htm
Extractions: Lodge Members and Officers Forasmuch as Aleister Crowley's text of the Gnostic Mass is marvelously ambiguous, especially in its stage directions, it is not surprising that whenever some community establishes a regular and ongoing celebration of the mass it is also likely to see the development of local and/or personal traditions of performance. This is not in and of itself a bad thing. People and groups can often both express and transmit their deepest understandings of the text by means of these traditions. Nonetheless, when a tradition becomes a mere routine devoid of its original significance it may well end up stultifying the very understanding out of which it first arose. As our Grand Master Sabazius writes in Agape (I:4), "The Gnostic Mass is a Well which will never run dry, unless we stop it up with the debris of our own ideas and habits."

Extractions: November 8 - December 18, 2001 This exhibition features a selection of classic, finely illustrated juvenile books published in the mid-to late nineteenth century, an era that witnessed dramatic growth in Europe in the literary and pictorial development of fairy lore and fantasy, as well as the introduction of the modern children's picture book. Significant innovations in illustration, wood engraving, color block printing and eventually chromolithography, occurring primarily in Great Britain, increasingly gave visual form to the folk-based, oral traditions of the fairy tale and nursery rhyme. "Once Upon a Time" is dedicated to the memory of Herbert H. Hosmer (1913-1995), a collector of children's books and juvenilia who was generous and kind in sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with me over the sixteen years of our friendship. Volumes on display are on loan from private collections. Those lending books are thanked for their participation. Origins of the Fairy Tale This essay concentrates on early sources and manifestations of the fairy tale, while "Once Upon a Time" also reflects on somewhat later developments in the children's picture book. Many of the books discussed below appear in the exhibition; earlier volumes, published before 1850, are cited to lend context but are not included in the display.

Extractions: This tiny isle, Gaiola, is but a few yards from shore, just east of Cape Posillipo. It is the site of an ancient navigators' shrine to Venus as well as near the site of the few Roman ruins of "the sorcerer's house" where the poet Virgil , also renowned as a magician, is said to have taught. In this picture, it is watched by a small statue of St. Francis. Gaiola has two small neighbor islets. The modern house on it is abandoned and, at last notice, the isle and house were up for salewith no takers! Over the centuries, Gaiola has developed a reputation of being haunted and there are many rumors about the misfortunes including violent death that befall those who inhabit it. These rumors, obviously, were not started by real estate agents. July 2 In 330 a.d. a Christian convert built a Christian city to replace the old and pagan Rome. His Constantine the Great's faith would soon be proclaimed the official religion of the Roman Empire. The bad news would be that he had inadvertently made it possible for that Empire to be divided in two, sundering its church right along with it. There were organizational problems among early Christians. Should the bishops of Rome, Alexandria, Ephesus, Antioch and Constantinople all have equal authority? Or should Rome dominate, based on its imperial political status and the special history of the Roman church that is, its founding by the apostle Peter? This squabble was joined by divisive theological ones: debates on the nature of God, Christ and the Trinity.
