Extractions: Playwright, novelist Sir James M. Barrie was a gay author, born in Kirriemuir, Angus. Barrie attended Edinburgh University, then he entered journalism in Nottingham in 1883, but lost his job after writing a piece extolling the delights of "Pretty Boys". Thus, settled in London in 1885. He became known by his sudies of Scottish rural life. He was made a baronett in 1913 abd received the Order of Merit in 1922. He wrote the children's classic Peter Pan . Barrie's marriage was never consumated... "but, then, Barrie never consumated any relationship with anyone, including his strange friendship with the three Davies boys." As their father died he became a surrogate father, and after their mother died he effectively adopted the boys. Further tragedy followed - his beloved George Davies, only five years old when they first met, and the great love of Barrie's life, was killed in action at Flanders in 1915, and his adored Michael drowned with an Oxford friend while swimming in the Thames.
Extractions: Author and playwright. Born in Kirriemuir and educated at Dumfries Academy and the University of Edinburgh. Barrie is best known for the creation of Peter Pan, the boy who would not grow up, the inspiration for which came to him when a boy playing in the garden of Moat Brae, a house in Dumfries. Barrie's own character in many ways mirrored his creation; he was a small man and this lack of stature had always upset him, perhaps explaining why he related better to children than adults. His life was full of tragedy; the deaths of a brother, sister and his mother effected him deeply, his wife had an affair with a younger man and left him and two of his adopted children died tragically. All royalties from Peter Pan are now appropriately given to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London. If you have found this information useful please consider

Extractions: Home Your Council At Kirriemuir he still had to persuade his family he would earn his living as a writer. He saw a job advertised by the "Nottingham Journal" for someone to write leading articles. James sent away a University essay and got the job. Later, when the owners had to economise, he was out of work and came home. Listening once more to his mother’s tales, he thought he could turn them into an article. Kirriemuir was to be called "Thrums". The piece was sent to a London newspaper. Back came the reply, "I like that Scotch thing. Any more of those?" In 1885, he moved to London, again with Alexander’s help. He worked hard on a wide range of articles for newspapers. This brought him regular money at last - £20 a month! He had "Auld Licht Idylls" published in 1888 and people liked the humour in it. Many successful novels followed and James was thrilled when Robert Louis Stevenson wrote to him from Samoa. J M Barrie married an actress in 1894, and when they were on honeymoon in Switzerland they bought a St Bernard puppy. This dog was to become an important part of a future play.

EMAIL The Sibling Connection James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937), the playwright who wrote Peter Pan, was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland. When he was six years old, his older brother, David,a young teenager, died in a skating accident. Their mother was devastated by this loss. James believed that David had been his mother's favorite. Perhaps as an attempt to console her, he tried to replace his dead brother and become like him, even wearing his clothes. In later writings, Barrie notes that, to his mother, the boy David remained a boy of thirteen forever. Later, this idea would blossom into the inspiration for Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. Educated at Edinburgh University, Barrie moved to England to work as a journalist, and lived in London for the rest of his life. He was successful as a playwright, and numbered among his friends Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (author of Sherlock Holmes) and George Bernard Shaw. He married, but the marriage ended in divorce and he had no children of his own. However, when his friends, Arthur and Sylvia Llewellyn Davies, died, he became the legal guardian of their five sons. The boys' names were Peter, John, Michael, Nicholas, and Arthur. Their escapades probably inspired the events in Neverland.
