His works frequently portrays life as a romantic adventure. Accordingly, he is most noted for writing Peter Pan , the boy who refused to grow up. Barrie's father was a poor Scottish weaver, David Barrie. Because his father worked long hours, he was much closer to his mother, Margaret Ogilvy. Throughout Barrie's work, the recurring themes of motherhood and sentiment are felt to be a result of Barrie's relationship with his mother. Barrie was the youngest son in his family. When he was thirteen, his brother drowned. With the shock of her son's death, Margaret became an invalid and Barrie reputedly tried to replace his brother by lavishing attention on his mother. In 1896, he wrote Margaret Ogilvy for her. Sensitive about his height of about five feet, Barrie often felt more comfortable talking with children than adults. He was educated at a number of schools operated by his brother, A.O. Barrie. He attended the University of Edinburgh, and obtained a master's degree in 1882. Barrie worked as a journalist for the Nottingham Journal in 1883. His first literary work was published in the

Extractions: J.M. Barrie Every child and every adult who is still a child at heart knows the story of Peter Pan, but fewer know that the creator of that timeless (and ageless) story was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, and that the inspiration for many of his stories came from his Scottish home. Barrie was educated in Kirriemuir and Forfar, and later at Edinburgh University, where he studied English and graduated in 1882. He worked for the Nottingham Journal and later the St. Jamess Gazette of London before devoting himself completely to his literary career. His early works, published between 1888 and 1900, are characteristically Scottish in dialect, humor and sensitivity. After 1900, Barrie devoted himself to childrens books; The Little White Bird, which introduced the Peter Pan character, was published in 1902. Although the Peter Pan books (there are three in all) represent Barries best-known work, he was also a successful playwright. The author described his work as a means to play hide and seek with angles. Barrie shared his interest in fairies with his friend, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who will be featured later on in this months series on Scottish writers.

Extractions: James Barrie James Matthew Barrie was born in 1860 in Scotland. For the first six years of his life, he lived in the shadow of his elder brother David. Just before his fourteenth birthday, David was killed in a skating accident. Barrie soon realised that, by dying so young, David would remain a boy forever in the minds of all those who had known him. If Peter Pan had grown up then he would be in his nineties today. On average there are 25 productions of Peter Pan in Britain at Christmas. In France, Alain Marcel once staged a high-tech musical version with lasers and members of the cast flying over the audience. In 1897, Barrie was a successful writer both in Britain and the United States. He was married to the actress Mary Ansell but they had no children. This didn't stop him from meeting children. One of these was a four-year-old girl called Margaret who called Barrie "my friendy". Because she couldn't pronounce her r's, the word "friendy" often sounded like "fwendy" or "wendy". She died when she was six but Barrie immortalised her in Peter Pan by calling his heroine Wendy, a name that he created. Barrie's London home was very close to Kensington Gardens and it was here that he first met the Llewellyn Davies boys - George, Jack and Peter. He described their mother as "the most beautiful creature I had ever seen" and soon he was a frequent visitor to their house where he would tell the boys stories. One of these stories was about the youngest boy, Peter, who, according to Barrie, would one day fly away to Kensington Gardens so that he might be a boy forever. When children died, Peter would take them on a journey to a place called Never Never Land. When George heard the story, he said that "dying must be an awfully big adventure!". Barrie wrote the words down. They would later became the most famous words spoken in Peter Pan.
