Ernest Hemingway Under Fire; the Story of a Squad Henri Barbusse (1874-1935) was a French soldier. Under Fire is the English translation of his acclaimed anti-war novel Le Feu (1916) one of the first "serious" (that is critical, thoughtful, truthful) works about the war, and one that influenced many other writers and even, later, film makers. It may not be too much to say that, along with The Oxford Book of English Verse, 1250-1900 , it "presides over the Great War in a way that has never been sufficiently appreciated" ( Fussell Siegfried Sassoon read Le Feu in French, was profoundly effected by it, and included a long quotation, in French, at the beginning of Counter-Attack . At Craiglockhart , Sassoon loaned his French copy of Le Feu to Wilfred Owen , was in turn "set alight" by it. (The Lee Library also holds a copy of Le Feu translated into German: Das Feuer (Tagebuch einer Korporalschaft) . Zurich, M. Rascher, 1918.)

Extractions: Under Fire The Story of a Squad (excerpts) By Henri Barbusse Translated by Fitzwater Wray To the memory of the comrades who fell by my side at Crou Chapter One: The Vision MONT BLANC, the Dent du Midi, and the Aiguille Verte look across at the bloodless faces that show above the blankets along the gallery of the sanatorium. This roofed-in gallery of rustic wood-work on the first floor of the palatial hospital is isolated in Space and overlooks the world. The blankets of fine woolred, green, brown, or whitefrom which those wasted cheeks and shining eyes protrude are quite still. No sound comes from the long couches except when some one coughs, or that of the pages of a book turned over at long and regular intervals, or the undertone of question and quiet answer between neighbors, or now and again the crescendo disturbance of a daring crow, escaped to the balcony from those flocks that seem threaded across the immense transparency like chaplets of black pearls. Silence is obligatory. Besides, the rich and high-placed who have come here from all the ends of the earth, smitten by the same evil, have lost the habit of talking. They have withdrawn into themselves, to think of their life and of their death. A servant appears in the balcony, dressed in white and walking softly. She brings newspapers and hands them about.

"Come On In The Water's Fine"(Luke 3:15-17, 21-22) French writer Henri Barbusse (18741935) tells of a conversation overheardin a trench full of wounded men during the First World War. http://www.epulpit.net/040111.htm
Extractions: Show Clip from "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?" (Baptism scene, edited for language) That movie has become one of my favorite movies. And I particularly love that scene. As you watch the scene unfold you see the human need, the tugging of the heart and spirit as Delmar sees and recognizes the baptismal procession. He instinctively recognizes his need for spiritual cleansing and renewal. And he acts upon it. And then there's that last line of invitation, "Come on in, boys, the water's fine!" I love that. Every time we celebrate and someone is baptized, that's the invitation from God, "Come On In, the Water's Fine!" Every time we have one of those moments where our lives are renewed through a fresh outpouring of God's Holy Spirit, that's the invitation from God, "Come On In, the Water's Fine!" For those who have already been baptized it's an invitation to remember and be renewed. For those who haven't been baptized, it's an invitation to take the plunge. "Come On In, the Water's Fine!" Even Jesus, the Son of God, felt that need and was baptized. The Gospel of Luke describes it this way.
