Current taxonomy of the rhizobia [Updated 6th February 2004] The species listed here are all of the most current validly published names for the rhizobia. The rhizobia are nitrogen fixing bacteria that form root nodules on legume plants. Most of these bacterial species are in the Rhizobiacae family in the alpha-proteobacteria. Most rhizobia are in either the Rhizobium Mesorhizobium Sinorhizobium or Bradyrhizobium genera. However recent research has shown that there are other rhizobial species outside these genera.
