    Extractions: What's New May 25, 2004 A Note About Subscription Rates In response to an inquiry from a subscriber, we gathered the following data concerning the most recent change in the full-rate subscription to Tree Physiology . The table shows the change in rate from 2003 to 2004 in U.S., Australian and Canadian dollars. Australian and Canadian rates are calculated from the U.S. rate according to U.S. Federal Reserve historical currency rates for January 2, of the years 2003 and 2004 ( http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/h10/hist/ ). The data show that the rate per page either increased or decreased, according to currency. However, the rate in Canadian funds, in which costs of publication are denominated, declined by 7%. The rates shown are for the print journal (including worldwide postage) plus campus-wide online access to the entire content of Tree Physiology (i.e., Volumes 1 through 24). This picture shows a cochlea in which the fluid spaces were filled with colored latex and then the bony walls were dissected away. We used orange latex to fill the perilymphatic spaces, and dark blue to fill the endolymphatic space. The spiral, snail-like arrangement of the cochlear fluid spaces is clearly seen. Our laboratory is interested in the mechanisms that the nervous system uses to process sensory information. For example, what makes auditory neurons uniquely suited to the tasks that they must accomplish? What kinds of synaptic and ionic mechanisms normally operate, and what kinds of plasticity are present in the system? Other studies We recently have begun studying the effects of different forms of deafness on central auditory processing mechanisms. Cells in the nervous system sense their inputs and their own activity, and can respond by changing the proteins that they make and use. This can affect information processing.

All age groups benefit, from increased alertness in infants of meditating parents to increased health, happiness, and longevity in meditating elderly. People spanning the full range of socioeconomic levels and intellectual abilities benefit, again indicating the universality of Maharishi's program. The following briefly summarizes the overall research findings by category: physiological, psychological, sociological, and ecological. The original landmark research on the physiological correlates of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation technique was published in Science, American Journal of Physiology, and Scientific American in 1970-1972 (papers 1, 3, 4). This research found that the Transcendental Meditation technique produces a physiological state of restful alertness. During the technique the physiology becomes deeply rested, as indicated by significant reductions in respiration, minute ventilation, tidal volume, and blood lactate, and significant increases in basal skin resistance (an index of relaxation). At the same time the physiology is alert rather than asleep, as indicated by an increased abundance of alpha waves in the EEG. These findings led researcher Dr. Keith Wallace to conclude that restful alertness is a fourth major state of consciousness, termed transcendental consciousness, that is physiologically distinct from ordinary waking, dreaming, and deep sleep (paper 2).
