CANTERBURY ANIMAL RESPECT NETWORK HOMEPAGE 2002 - ZOOS the REAL rescue centres and sanctuaries are doing a MERSEYSIDE One of the worst zoosin Britain. information comes from The CAPTIVE ANIMALS PROTECTION SOCIETY http://www.carn-age.org.uk/zoos.html
Extractions: The term 'zoo' was not used until the early 1800s when the Zoological Society of London was founded. At the end of WW2 the UK had only 14 zoos, but by the 80s the number of zoos rose to about 250. Today zoos are a relic of a bygone Victorian age. There are some 10,000 zoos worldwide. Some zoos offer better conditions for animals than others, but almost all of them have cages and enclosures which are of a poor standard. Space in zoos rarely, if ever, matches the animals' natural range, and more commonly is reduced to virtually nothing. Electric fences often give the impression that enclosures are larger than they actually are. Birds are virtually stripped of their most precious gift - flight, consequently captive birds like vultures and pelicans are prone to bone disease. For 15 hours a day many animals may be shut away in their night quarters with even less room to move. You can still see elephants in small concrete pens, monkeys in bare cages, and bears in barren pits. The quality of animals' environment in zoos is paltry. The animals' boredom and suffering can be seen in the way they pace up and down the same area and sway back and forth. Some actually go mad with frustration. Some zoo enclosures mean that the inmates cannot even enjoy their most basic behavioural repertoire, including exercise, social interaction and bathing. When animals do find company, their world may be torn apart when cage mates are sold. Solitary and shy animals are often in enclosures with viewing from all sides, and even a window in the night quarters as well. Visitors tap the glass of tanks, poke the animals, and are noisy and boisterous.
Extractions: Full Review I have visited the Wildlife Park several times. The San Diego Wildlife Park is one of the most interesting wildlife sanctuaries and breeding programs on earth. The Wildlife Park has saved several animals from extinction, often taking species off the endangered list. This is a non-profit park you can be very proud to give your money too. Thousands and thousand of acres, the park is divided into several large habitats, each emulating a different part of the world (East Africa, for example). Inside each habitat, all the herbivore animals are placed together. Because the wide expanse, you see natural behaviors you would never see in zoos, defensive posturing. I once say a baby being born by an antelope. In sum you will enjoy your visit, and your money will be doing good things. If you visit only three times in a year, you'll still save money by buying a year pass, which is cheaper than three tickets. You'll get a monthly magazine with coupons and great articles as well. You'll probably find yourself going more often, and being glad for it.
Re: I Have A Question About Working With Wolves? Wendy Keeling Laboratory animal Technician Butler University. know if this will help, but wolf sanctuaries may have a zoologist but I have worked in zoos and am http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/Jan2003/1042692129.Zo.r.html
Extractions: Hi Tiffany, Thank you for the question. I am a veterinary technician. I worked in small animal practice for ten years. I now work in medical research. Since I am not a zoologist, and wasnt really sure myself what it meant to be a zoologist, I e-mailed a group of laboratory animal technicians. Many responded with some great advice for you. I copied and pasted each of their replies in this message. I hope you find it helpful. I wish you the best of luck! I would suggest to this high schooler to first decide what it is that they want to do with wolves whether it be direct physiology, population dynamics, or instinct development or any one of about a million other facets of a wolves life. If they want to study population dynamics with in the species, look for programs/books on Ecology. If they want to look at interactions with other species, look for a comparative zoology program, so on and so forth. There are a number of conservationist groups (Isaac Walton League for example) that sponsors programs for students to participate in conservation project, in various environments throughout the country. If this student were to make contact with a group like this, I am sure that could get them pointed in the right direction.

Extractions: "Prior to coming to PAWS, Tammy had been the victim of forty years of torturous training, dragged to the ground with ropes and chains and beaten as part of her training routine. When she was not in training, she lived on chains on cold, wet concrete floors. When we finally rescued her and brought her to PAWS, I thought she would not survive another year; she was frail and thin and very depressed." says Pat Derby, President and co-founder of PAWS. "We vowed when she came to PAWS that she would never be chained or cruelly trained again. For the past eight years, she has lived here peacefully with her constant companion, Annie, enjoying their grassy pasture, their swimming pool and lots of trees. We have watched her develop her personality and sense of play, and we are happy that she lived at least a small portion of her life free from further pain and suffering. But the 40 years she spent on chains had finally taken its toll. If she had been left in the wild, she might have lived longer. I'm certain she would have enjoyed a happier, more fulfilling life," Ed Stewart, sanctuary director and co-founder, added.
