ABCNEWS.com : Zoo Animals At Risk Of Foot-and-Mouth GO TO Select a Topic. Gill, director of South Lakes Wild animal Park in England APPhoto), Survival Issues. European zoos Call for http://abcnews.go.com/sections/world/DailyNews/britain010328_footmouth.html
Extractions: Wildcats aren't generally supposed to eat poultry, but as the foot-and-mouth outbreak ravages Britain and prices of fresh red meat soar, the staff at South Lakes has been forced to increase the chicken quota in the wildcats' diets in a desperate bid to fight starvation. Across Britain and Europe, zoos and wildlife parks are emptying while food stocks are being depleted. At South Lakes Wild Animal Park, situated in Britain's hardest-hit district, park director David Gill said the zoo only had fresh meat stocks to last until Thursday. Vaccinations could prevent animals from getting infected, but vaccination is a difficult option for governments. Under European Union (EU) regulations, culling animals is the only way to earn a "disease free" status on world markets. If vaccinations were approved, countries would lose their status and face import bans around the world.

Extractions: From tiny Imani, a prematurely born and desperately ill gorilla baby, to fiercely independent and aggressive Nola, a 25-year-old Northern White Rhinoceros, the animals at the Zoo have all experienced the nurturing care of its deeply involved staff. Involved not only in the individual animals' lives, but in ensuring the continued survival of the Earth's most endangered species, such as the Giant Panda and the California condor. Whether it means finding out the secret to encouraging Bai Yun and Shi Shi (the only giant panda pair on the continent) to mate, or introducing dramatic procedures into the relationship between male and female White Rhinos, those who keep the Zoo running are determined to keep these populations alive and healthy. Get caught up in the drama of veterinary medicine at the Zoo, celebrate each triumph and mourn each loss, all against the backdrop of life in the practically wild. Learn how one tiny inhabitant can bridge generations and how sometimes, at the Zoo, the unexpected is the rule. From extremely selective koalas to puzzle-solving polar bears, meet animals as eccentric, loveable, and heroic as the people that work round-the-clock to keep them healthy, safe, and happy. And all without a single whimper, tweet, or roar of thanks from the visitors, at least!
