SOLUTION: Congregations have established mentoring programs to instill discipline, transmit values, and provide positive role models to the city’s most vulnerable youth. Each summer for more than 40 years, Jewish children from around the Midwest have come to Goldman Union Camp Institute in Zionsville to learn about Jewish history and ethics and to take part in recreation. About 300 4 th through 10 th graders attend each of the two month-long summer sessions. Another 30 to 40 12 th graders enroll in Avodah, an intensive nine-week program of work, study, and social experiences. Rabbi Ron Klotz, director of the camp, describes it as “a celebration of Jewish life.” Goldman Union is one of 12 camps owned and operated by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, an organization of about 900 Reform congregations. As such, it takes a liberal approach to Judaism, Klotz says. “We want children to learn everything about Judaism. Then they have the latitude to make decisions when they’re older—whether they will keep kosher, how they will observe the holidays. There are many choices.” Many Christian and Islamic organizations offer a similar program—a camp or “vacation Bible school” that offers recreational opportunities, but whose main purpose is to teach children the fundamentals of a faith tradition.

I started using one of the precursors to the Internet, BBSs, around the age of 11 and I first got on the Internet when I was 13 or 14, around the same time that I realized I was attracted to boys and not girls. I did come out to a few of my female friends, and they were supportive, but I personally knew of no one like me; I had no gay friends in real life. So, like any good computer geek I turned to the Internet. I did find several friends around the same age, but more importantly I ran across a forum posting where a faciliator was answering the questions of another gay teen like myself. I quickly emailed the facilitator and discussed my thoughts and feelings with him. He was a mentor for me at an important time. We never met in person and his name and email address are lost in the digital ether, but I am forever indebted to this stranger. In the real world, life guides are also needed, especially for the young, says Tina Cheng, director of general pediatrics and adolescent medicine at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center . Cheng says that in a society where unintentional injury, homicide and suicide are the leading causes of death among those ages 15 to 24, mentoring isn't just about giving good advice; it's preventive medicine. Tina Cheng wants to determine if youth mentoring does in fact decrease problem behavior such as drug use, aggression and violence, all of which can cause morbidity and mortality. Cheng, who joined the Children's Center this past April, is among a small group of Hopkins researchers leading a multidivisional effort to both develop and evaluate youth mentoring programs. Cheng and her colleagues want to determine if mentoring programs can in fact enhance positive development and decrease problem behavior such as drug use, aggression and violence. Cheng says that without proper mentoringmeaning a relationship with someone who listens and offers guidancetoday's teenager can be put at risk.
