WHEN: Friday, June 11, 1999 1:30-3:00 pm WHERE: Gillette High School, Gillette, Wyoming Governor Geringer will host a technology demonstration for members and staff of the Western Governors' Association. More than 80 guests will see how Wyoming is leading the way with telecommunications technology for education. Technology demonstrations will include Wyoming Equality Network The Wyoming Equality Network includes the largest geographic ATM-Cell Relay deployment in the nation. ATM-Cell Relay Service technology enables Wyoming high schools to employ real-time interactive video and provide high-speed data transfer and Internet access. ATM-CRS's attractive characteristics include high bandwidth, low-delay and high speed. Additionally, the advanced ATM network backbone lays the foundation for cutting-edge telemedicine applications, convenient continuing education for professionals and a range of private sector business uses. The Wyoming Equality Network offers the 100,000 primary and secondary Wyoming students in 402 schools across 98,000 square miles equal access to specialized course material and Internet resources regardless of their location. The world through the Internet will be accessible to rural students like the five students enrolled in Four Oaks Elementary school in Crook County and to the four students at the end of a 25-mile dirt road that leads to River Bridge elementary school in Albany County.
Center For Innovative School Scheduling -- What We've Learned of some money that can be transferred to the media budget.) Additional used in block and traditionally scheduled high schools in the state of wyoming. http://curry.edschool.virginia.edu/centers/ciss/learned/main.html
Extractions: Block Scheduling: What We've Learned Issues Related to School Climate Issues Related to Academics In one study, no significant differences were found in the performance of seventh grade students on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) in mathematics, when comparing students in A/B block versus single period schedules (Schroth and Dixon, 1995). There is evidence that block scheduling has the most positive academic impact on courses that serve all students, including the less academically proficient and that block scheduling has less academic benefit for higher level college bound courses (North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, 1997). Some students often labeled "at-risk" are more likely to stay m school; this is especially true in the 4/4 schedule, probably because students may repeat several classes and still graduate with their class (Reid, 1995; Sharman, 1990). In some courses, such as mathematics, teachers may cover less material; however, many teachers report that the material which they do teach is taught better and taught in greater depth. Again, this finding is more likely to occur in the 4/4 plan (Kramer, 1996a). As part of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (1996) mathematics curricula in the U.S. and other industrialized countries were compared. U.S. mathematics curricula were less focused and covered more topics superficially. Japanese mathematics curricula covered fewer topics in much greater depth. The U.S, ranked 28th: Japan ranked 3rd.

CSHE/CSHP focuses on the six health-risk behavior categories, identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which are known to cause premature morbidity and mortality among youth. These six categories are: unintentional and intentional injury, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behavior, poor dietary behaviors, and physical inactivity. This program is operated through a cooperative agreement with the CDC. Activities include: production and distribution of the results of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) production of the newsletter Wyoming Health Briefs coordination of the annual Summer Institute for Health Education, HIV prevention training opportunities, partnership with UW for provision of technical assistance to schools on K-12 Health Education Standards through the WYHPE Network promotion of Coordinated School Health Programs (CSHP).

League Of American Bicyclists: Media Center Which made us very uncool in a wyoming high school where every boy was saving his bucks for a pickup. Some kids even saw cycling as unAmerican. Which it is. http://www.bikeleague.org/mediacenter/medprs10.htm
Extractions: Outside Magazine January 2000 AN UN-AMERICAN ACTIVITY: What gets the equivalent of 1,000 miles per gallon, doesn't pollute, will save the world, and transports you in breezy style? Your bike. By Mark Jenkins When I was 13 my family left the high plains of Wyoming and moved to a small town in northern Holland. We went from living in a land so dry that tumbleweeds bounced down the street to a country so wet that canals had been carved through the neighborhoods to drain the rainwater. In Wyoming the dominant color was brown, nothing but snow fell from the sky, and the sun was indomitable. In Holland the dominant color was green, water poured ceaselessly from heaven, and the sun hid atop a mattress of clouds. With fewer than five people per square mile, Wyoming was one of the least populated places on the planet. Holland had 900 people packed into every square mile. My parents looked upon this year abroad as shock therapy for the soul. My brothers and sisters and I were six white-flour kids from middle America. We left a tract home on the edge of the prairie for a brick duplex, with a thatch roof and a tulip garden, on a cobblestone street. Mom put us directly into Dutch schools. None of us spoke a word of Dutch. The Vietnam War had made Americans unpopular in Europe. We learned how to argue in Dutch in three months, were fluent in six. We learned about Rembrandt and van Gogh, how to play chess and do multilingual crossword puzzles. And we learned how to bicycle. Not physically, of coursewe all knew how to ridebut philosophically. We'd left a cowboy culture in which most people drove pickup trucks and we resurfaced in a land of bicycles.

Extractions: Platte County, WY Outcomes Learning skills and success (gpa, academic progress, study skill improvement): At-risk students receive academic assistance through the In-Focus group where they work with teacher mentors throughout the school year to become more successful in all aspects of school performance, but primarily with academic achievement. The selection process identified 29 students out of a total school population of 356. Of the 29 students identified, 23 agreed to attempt the Individualized Improvement Plan. GPA results were disappointing as both the 23 who participated in the IIP and the 6 who declined to participate all showed gpa decline over the year. However, the average decline for those participating was less than one-half a letter grade; whereas those who did not participate recorded over one letter grade decline between semesters. Conclusion from In-Focus coordinator: The total number of students analyzed is not large enough to make any definitive conclusions, but we can say that we tried a systematic approach to intervene with students struggling with their academic achievement, and they did show some improvement. Some of the individuals did not improve to the point that they passed all subjects, but they did show improvement and started making better decisions that helped them move in the right direction. Several of the In-focus students who dropped out of school at the end of last academic year have returned to school for this fall semester. This is an encouraging sign.
