Extractions: Whether you are writing an in-class essay exam or a 20-page research paper, there are some basic guidelines which you should keep in mind. The first part of this handout gives general information which is relevant to the writing of any historical essay. The second part gives tips which you should utilize in writing take-home essays, exams, and research papers. An essay is not simply a list of facts. You must organize the facts into themes which support a central argument or thesis. This thesis should be introduced in the beginning of the paper and developed throughout the paper one step at a time. The stronger your thesis, the easier it will be for you to develop a strong argument. Use an outline to organize your thoughts in a clear, coherent and logical manner and to guide you in writing the essay. Organizationally, the essay has three main parts: Introduction . Use the introduction to state your thesis, outline the main points you will make in the essay, and describe the conclusions which you will draw in the essay. History essays are not mystery papers; the reader should know from the beginning what your conclusions are. Use the introduction to draw the reader into the essay. Often it is easier to write your introduction last , after you clearly know what arguments you develop in the essay.

What is little-known, however, is that the BJP is the electoral wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The RSS provides daily sessions of ideological and martial education to millions of people across the country, and coordinates a large and varied spectrum of subsidiary fronts, including the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) which is its religious wing. The VHP has pioneered immense violence against Muslim and Christian minorities in the last decade. The various fronts have overlapping, multiple membership, the leaders of each front also are important Sangh functionaries. What is even less recognised is that the RSS has been functioning for the last seventy odd years continuously, that it cultivated direct links with the Italian and German fascists, and that its founders acknowledged the influence of fascist authoritarianism, militarism and racism quite openly at one time. It might seem strange that in the middle of its designs about a transition to a highly authoritarian, militaristic, nuclearised Hindu nationhood, the Sangh combine invests a lot of attention to the writing of history. It is redirecting the production of school textbooks to promote an abrasive nation-worship and religious nationalism. It strenuously objects to all left-oriented historical writings. It is systematically packing all research organisations and funding bodies with trusted right-wingers. It tries to stop publication of edited volumes of archival documents dealing with the period of the anti-imperialist movement. A systematic smear campaign is directed at left historians to discredit their academic credentials and personal integrity. Important segments of the media are pressed into the service of the smear campaign.

This will prove useful in researching The Young City , but I will need much more than two hours to do this job properly. I strongly suspect that the Globe was something of an evangelical Protestant paper in 1884. It wasn't difficult to find articles on temperence, much of it preceded with the title "SCOTT ACT CAMPAIGN". Since Faith is a suffragette, and temperence went hand in hand with that movement, I'm thinking that temperence has to have a part to play in this story. For me, journal writing seems an ideal instructional tool for taking students to higher order cognitive learning levels and for achieving many of the affective learning goals I have identified as requisite to deeper understanding. I have also found journal writing to be a very effective means for integrating all of the elements of historical thinking into my curriculum. When I speak of historical thinking, I am referring to the definition outlined in the National Standards for History , which includes the following components: I never want to sacrifice content for process, and journal writing does not require that of those who choose to utilize it in the classroom. Another benefit of journal writing for me has been the tremendous flexibility inherent in its design. These include editing and making the Web site more interactive, completing all of the exercises and polishing the tutorial. When the Web site and tutorial are finished, they will be used in courses scheduled for 1999-2000. The original proposal described a bibliographic tutorial to be used in conjunction with the History department's required Junior Seminar, which is offered twice each year. (Several other Reed departments offer similar junior seminars, and I hope that they will ultimately be able to use parts of this project as a model.) These seminars are designed to develop students' research and writing skills in preparation for the year-long, required senior thesis. While junior seminars provide instruction in research methods in particular disciplines, they also include intensive study of texts in that discipline. The History junior seminar combines ten weeks of reading and conference participation with seminars on library research as well as brief lectures and hand-outs on writing. Because so much is demanded of them, students frequently need extra instruction, especially in research techniques. The main goal of the course is to enable students to successfully plan and execute a thirty-page history research paper over the course of one term. Most instructors ask students to break this task into steps, which are evaluated as they submit an initial research proposal, an annotated bibliography, a first and final draft of the research paper, and a final oral presentation to their classmates. The course also features two seminar sessions on library research techniques, usually conducted by Reed librarian Marilyn Kierstead.
