Extractions: Back to Tech Pubs Home Page Search engines often find many sites, and there's no way of knowing which of the sites you need without testing them. To be sure that your own Web site appears in searches, you should register it with the major search enginges. Most allow you to do that. But beware, registering with search engines usually means you'll be getting more junk email since it makes you visible to spammers. In the past few years, the major search engines transmogrified into portals that pre-select the hits displayed for the more common searches. The portals say they save us time by screening and rejecting large numbers of irrelevant sites. Maybe so. Sometimes the portals' search results are right on the money; sometimes you need to make broader searches with a less selective search engine. Note that, in August 1999, studies reported that only a small percentage of the Web was actually being indexed by search engines (another reason to register with them). Even AltaVista, which once searched the entire Internet, was found to index only 15%. Some search engines have improved greatly since then, but caveat emptor is still the word of the day, especially since many portals and search engines sell positions in their searches.

Lynch and Sarah Horton Wired Style: Principles of English Usage in the Digital Age by Constance Hale and Jesse Scanlon The demand for content managers, online writers and Web site editors has tapered in the last year. But the field of online writing and editing is sure to be around for a long time. After all, someone has to write and edit the millions of words on the Web. If you are a print writer or editor, or aspire to be one, you might consider writing for the Web in addition to print. Also, if you have a liberal arts degree or are considering PR, marketing or advertising, it can't hurt to understand the fundamentals of writing for the Web as well. As the Web evolves and becomes more sophisticated, so will the roles of online editors and writers. Not only should you be a competent and engaging communicator, but you should also learn the fundamentals of Web design and production as well. A background in Web technologies such as Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash and Java is helpful, but those can be added later. First, focus on your core competencies.

Extractions: Power-Revision TechniquesSentence-Level Revision You've probably heard plenty of times that writing should be lean, mean, clear, direct, succinct, active, and so on. This is one of those self-evident truthswhy would anyone set out to write any other way? But what does that really mean, what do sentences look like that are not that way, what sorts of things are wrong with them, and how do you fix them? Sentences do have ways of becoming flabby, redundant, wordy, unclear, indirect, passive, and just plain old hard to understand. Even so, they remain grammatically "correct"all their subjects and verbs agree, the commas are in the right places, the words are spelled correctly. Still, these sentences are far more difficult to read than any sentence with just a comma problem. The following sections can't pretend to cover all of the ways sentences can go bad at this higher level, but they do cover seven of the most common problems and shows you ways of fixing them. And knowing these seven will probably enable you to spot all the others we have not trapped and labeled yet. Specifically, here is what is covered: Weak be verbs Overnominalization ("noun stacks") Redundant phrasing Weak use of expletives (there is, it is)
