Extractions: One of the purposes of "Behind the Barricades" is to write, to present ideas of the writers free from the consumptive need to raise funds, issue stock, collect subscriptions and print copies. In an earlier life, "Behind the Barricades" was a member in good standing of the "old media." Before our first issue was printed, we drew the attention of reporter John McCaslin of the "Washington Times" who covers Washington in the "Inside the Beltway" column. Mr. McCaslin expressed interest in our campaign to challenge the FCC license of WAMU-FM, an NPR affiliate operating out of American University for its sponsorship of the "Diane Rehm" talk show. Ms. Rehm systematically excludes progressives and radicals from her guest lists and as callers. The internet provides an opportunity for us to create a web site without borders, without boundaries, without capital, without editors, publishers, shareholders, fund raisers, etc. It is an experiment in coining a new, non-dogmatic political doctrine challenging the duality of the Democratic and Republican parties as the only game in town. Our purpose is to devote full-time to the writing and creating of political dialogue, an intellectual revolution, as it where. The online press as presently constituted is a capitalist based enterprise employing all the usual techniques to raise funds and make moneysubscribers, stock, etc. The premise of Kurtz's examination is to present the money-making online magazine as the one and only model and then to get upset if their stock goes south, their subscribers and revenue streams dry up or some other disaster occurs. Nowhere in the article is any mention made of the format, content or reaction to the material. It's all about the money, not about the writing.

Extractions: Editor's Message I mentioned in September that from time to time this journal year I'd invite guest authors to write the JAAL Technology column. This month's guest, Mike Sharples, has worked for many years on innovative approaches in language and technology. He was a pioneer in creating environments for students to use computers to explore patterns in language through his Phrasebooks and Boxes programs. One thing I especially liked about this work was that Mike saw that language learning could be fun, and he built that perspective into his software. He has also been a leader in areas such as artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and computer support for collaborative writing. Working, as he does, in the United Kingdom, Mike has a perspective on educational technology issues that will add to my view from the United States. When I asked him if he would be interested in writing the October column, I also told Mike that I would very much like to hear his latest views on electronic books. When he wrote back to me with his acceptance, he suggested the topic of paper versus electronic publication.
