Extractions: LANGUAGE DISORDERS PROGRAM Childhood Language Disorders Program , now operating in each of our 37 Orients within the United States and Puerto Rico, serves, without regard to race, color, or creed, thousands of children who are afflicted with conditions that severely hamper their speaking, reading, and writing abilities. The afflicted child, if diagnosed early and given appropriate specialized help, can become a fully functioning and productive citizen. If not assisted, the child may become instead a heartbreaking liability for the family and for the state. Grand Commander Kleinknecht has succeeded in making the Scottish Rite Foundation, Southern Jurisdiction, U.S.A., Inc., much more active in generating funds for the clinics, centers, and programs. Nothing succeeds like success! From 1985 to 1998, the number of facilities and programs has grown to 133, with more clinics being established each year. Also, many of the existing clinics have continued to expand their services. From its inception, the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Program has helped tens of thousands of children with aphasia and/or dyslexia and a wide variety of other related language and learning disorders. It is one of three campuses of the state of Illinois' land-grant university, the University of Illinois. Its mission comprises three traditional elements teaching, research, and public service, each shaped by and relevant to its metropolitan setting as well as the University of Illinois' traditional pursuit of excellence. UIC serves not only the citizens of the state of Illinois but also students from throughout the nation and the world who are attracted by both the University's programs and the metropolitan setting on which it draws and to which it contributes. UIC seeks to provide its undergraduates with an education which is both broad and deep so as to prepare them for responsible citizenship, and to open intellectual and career opportunities which will challenge their abilities. In doing so, UIC takes special account and advantage of the extraordinary ethnic and cultural diversity of the Chicago metropolitan area, which encompasses two-thirds of the population of Illinois and from which it presently draws most of its undergraduate students. For the growing proportion of its students who are enrolled in graduate and professional programs, both in Chicago and at its regional sites, UIC offers an education that will prepare them to render skilled professional service and to assume positions of intellectual leadership in their disciplines and professions.

The Development Of Writing Centers: Variety And Diversity The development of writing centers in the 20th century. Possible historical antecedents the reasons for founding, various names or images, staffing and pedagogy, and relationship to the university http://www.newfoundations.com/History/WritingCtr.html
Extractions: edited 12/28/02 ABSTRACT Today, writing centers thrive on many college and university campuses. Yet, this has not always been the case. This paper traces the development of writing centers in the 20th century. Given the variety and diversity of centers, their development is presented by theme rather than chronology. After exploring some possible historical antecedents, the paper discusses the reasons for founding, various names or images, staffing and pedagogy, and relationship to the university at large. It concludes with a series of indicators that describe the current position of writing centers. Contents Introduction Historical Antecedents of the Writing Center Writing Centers' Relationship to the University Reasons for the Founding of Writing Centers ... Introduction On the campuses of many American colleges and universities today, students frequent a place that supports writing. And that support of writing may be the only commonality among these places. They differ in name, staffing, method, funding, and emphasis; yet, they are joined by their increasing presence and importance to the university community. In The American College and University: A History , Rudolph defined the American university as a place with This definition of variety can be applied as well to the writing centers that developed as part of the university. Kinkead and Harris in Writing Centers in Context asserted this diversity as the major commonality among centers.
Electronic Writing Assistance For Students Of The Claremont Colleges The writing centers' Mellon Grant Proposal groups of students to easily write a single paper, a task required of those doing clinics, labs, or other group projects http://www2.hmc.edu/www_common/writing/centweb/mellon.html
Extractions: The Writing Centers' Mellon Grant Proposal Abstract Introduction Statement of Objectives Rationale ... Biographies of Program Coordinators Because technology can fundamentally change writing and the writing process, we propose a two-year project that integrates faculty development, resources for students, and training for Writing Center staff at all the Claremont Colleges. The focus of the proposal is a series of hands-on faculty workshops that demonstrate how particular technologies can facilitate the use of writing in any course. In addition, the project provides ongoing support as faculty implement technology-based writing in their courses. The project also creates online writing resources for students that include informational and interactive components. Writing Centers participating in the project will offer online consulting services to individuals and groups of students. This integrated, intercollegiate approach will create an environment that takes full advantage of the pedagogical benefits that emerge from the joining of technology and writing. Technology can fundamentally change the way students and faculty think about writing and the writing process. Sadly, the Claremont Colleges lag far behind other institutions in the integration of technology and writing, both within introductory writing courses and within discipline-specific courses that use writing. At the 1997 Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC), approximately one-third of the 500 sessions addressed innovative ways to combine technology and writing. None of the Claremont Colleges faculty presented at this national forum. Claremont students and faculty would benefit from a concerted effort to bring writing and technology together. We therefore propose a two-year project that does so through faculty development, resources for students, and training for Writing Center consultants.

Some IVF centers have very low pregnancy rates. Other centers may have high pregnancy rates, but also a very high rate of triplet or higher multiple births. For these reasons, all couples considering IVF treatment should get a written statement of their clinic's recent pregnancy rates and evaluate them in relation to other clinics. The four biggest variables affecting a program's pregnancy rates are: The quality of the laboratory environment and the skill and experience of the embryology staff The skill and experience of the reproductive endocrinologist (fertility specialist) The average number of embryos transferred per procedure The cases taken on by the program for IVF treatment.
