Writing Center Journal 17.2 (Spring 1997): 89110. Writing centers have been rushing to add networked computer technologies to their services, but logistical questions have dominated ("How can this be done?") rather than theoretical questions. The latter are necessary for examining conceptions of technology that underlie discussions of networked writing-center services. Instrumental theories, the idea that technology is neutral, lead to a focus on purely logistical concerns and the belief that a center's basic mission will not change; substantive theories focus on the power of technology and the inevitable changes (for good or bad) that it will bring. Both theories are inadequate for researching theoretical questions; what's needed is a critical theory of technology (Feenberg) that can help to shape the designs of writing-center technologies. Writing And Learning: A Student Writer's Autonomy Jacoby makes some good points in comparing writing centers and medical clinics. It is a good idea that tutors should respect a writer s autonomy. http://english.mansfield.ohio-state.edu/writing/467/archives/000039.html
Extractions: Jay Jacoby argues that one of the essential elements of both writing centers and medical practices is the principle of informed consent, which enables tutees and patients to make their own decisions based on a complete understanding of the alternatives and consequences that could result from those decisions. Jacoby believes that Tutors must be sure that writers are informed of and understand the choices open to them, and that they have made those choices freely. I completely agree with Jacobys logic; a tutor should offer options, not instructions. However, Im troubled by an equally important issue that Jacoby raises with the question: With whom are writing center tutors collaborators: their clients or the institution that employs them? This is a problem to which Jacoby never offers a substantial solution and about which I often find myself concerned. Should a writing tutor follow an instructors orders even if it means compromising a students autonomy? Is it possible to satisfy the instructors requirements while respecting the students freedom to choose?
