Extractions: Freshman Chris Taft may be the only player on No. 3 Pitt who's a sure-fire pro prospect. Ezra Shaw/Getty Images Five years ago, Sports Illustrated published a story during the second week of the NCAA tournament under the headline "The NBA Factor." The piece, which was ably reported and deftly written by my very intelligent and handsome mail-reading colleague Grant Wahl , explicated on the theorem that in order for a team to win a national championship, it needed to have at least three future NBA players on its roster. To prove this assertion, the story revealed that every champ since 1976 had met this pro-rated standard. It's amazing how much things have changed in just five years. If we were to weigh in on this same issue during the '04 tourney, we'd have to headline it, "The NBA Non-Factor." With the draft now dominated by foreign players and high school seniors (you could have as many as eight to 10 high schoolers in the first round this year), this season's best college teams generally feature guys who are less-than-surefire pro prospects. This, incidentally, is not a bad thing. Whoever the 2004 champion is, it probably won't overwhelm you with eye-popping talent, but it will have older, mature players who play a beautiful brand of team basketball rarely seen in today's NBA.
Extractions: Quietly next weekend, on the eve of the Super Bowl, no less (in Boston, no less), U.S. track and field will kick off its Olympic year. Talk about starting out in the shadows. Yet, as a track journalist (some of the time, anyway) and track fan (all of the time), I am looking forward to having many questions answered this year, among them: *What can we expect of Marion Jones , the mother? By the end of 2002, Jones' performances had become decidedly mediocre, by her high standards. (Mediocre Marion, of course, is still better than most women in history). Since then she has changed coaches twice, given birth to her first child, stayed away from competition for a year and testified in the notorious BALCO investigation. The fact that she has committed to running and long jumping (!) indoors for the first time in her professional career is worth a raised a eyebrow. New passion? From 1997-2000, it looked as if Mrs. Jones might rewrite women's track records. It no longer looks that way, but does she have another chapter in her? *How about Mo and TiMo? Between 1997 and 2001

(AP ) High school basketball standout Gerald Wallace, who was considering bypassing college ball to try out for the NBA, has decided to play for Alabama rather than turn pro, said Crimson Tide coach Mark Gottfried. The Birmingham News on Monday also quoted Wallace's mother, Alice Walker, and AAU coach Kenneth Harris as saying Wallace would play for Alabama. "He's not going pro," said Harris. The 6-foot-7, 205-pound Childersburgh High School star, picked as "Mr. Basketball" by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, is considered one of the top preps in the nation. He had said in April that he would turn pro if he were guaranteed to be a lottery pick in the June 28 NBA draft. Since Wallace is only 17, and there are many who have already declared for the draft, Wallace would have likely been chosen between the middle and the end of the first round, said Gottfried.

Anderson Turning Pro His decision to turn pro was based on his family situation, said Anderson Press,United Press International, United States Basketball writers Assocation, and http://gtalumni.org/StayInformed/techtopics/sum91/anderson.html
Extractions: The announcement wasn't a surprise, but the disappointment was still captured on Bobby Cremins'' face. Tech's all-America point guard, Kenny Anderson, was passing up his final two seasons of eligibility and turning pro. At an April 8 press conference, Anderson said he would enter the National Basketball Association draft scheduled for June 26. Anderson's early entry into the NBA draft follows in the footsteps of former teammate Dennis Scott, who last year passed up his senior season and was picked fourth in the draft. Anderson had said during his sophomore season that he would turn professional if he was projected to be among the top five in the NBA draft. "It's something that I wanted to do," Anderson said. "I didn't rush into this decision. I listed all of my options, and coach Cremins did a great job with me. Coach Cremins and my mother played a trig role in this." His decision to turn pro was based on his ''family situation," said Anderson.. "The most important person is my mother, and I wanted to take c. are of her I hate leaving Georgia Tech and coach Cremins. Atlanta has been great to me, and it's going to be hard for me to leave here." "I support Kenny's decision 110 percent," said Cremins. "We've done a lot of research, and I've said from day one that

Tilden as usual played from the baseline but Vines again came to net more, often immediately behind his own serve. But Elly then won in Denver, San Francisco, and Oakland, capturing the series lead. Their next meeting, in the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 29, would put on display the competitiveness of Tilden. Writer Bill Henry of L.A. Times was a witness. Tilden analyzed the tour with his usual seeming honesty. Vines had indeed adjusted well to the indoor game, Bill affirmed, and was playing better than he ever had as an amateur. Especially, Vines had learned how to hold down his errors. As to his own game, Bill said he was playing about as well as ever.

Breaking Into The Erotica Market - By Magdalene Meretrix Write some fan mail to let your favorite writers know what you liked about Her firstbook, turning pro A Guide to Sexwork for the Ambitious and the Intrigued http://www.katyterrega.com/breakingin.html
Extractions: Most sex-writers realize pretty early in the game that out-and-out porn pays better than "literary erotica." But that doesn't mean that you should hang up your aspirations if you truly prefer writing for the erotica market. There are a number of erotica writers who are making a living writing erotica. What is their secret? Here are a few pointers to help you break into the market. 1 - Don't be afraid to write outside your chosen genre. For example, I write erotica, "essayrotica" (a term coined by Hanne Blank to describe Erotic Literary Non-Fiction essays), and non-fiction/how-to on topics of a sexual nature. Writing in each of these genres has boosted my sales in the others. Anything you write will get your name out there. As an aspiring erotica writer, you want name recognition. 2 - Don't be afraid to give your work away. There was a point when I felt bitter about giving so much work away. That was before I realized that most professional erotica writers list the publications where they've been published and, in most cases, half or more of those publications were non-paying. You want to be able to cite a long list of publications and you want your writing to spread far and wide - name recognition gets your foot in the door. Many of the non-paying markets have high-quality editors. I submitted a piece to a non-paying market and was told that I should make drastic changes. I balked, figuring a non-paying market couldn't possibly understand the high-quality I had produced. I took the piece to a well-known, professional, paying market. The first thing the editor told me? To make the exact same changes!

The others - the living - are those who pushed their control as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down, or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later. "Strange memories on this nervous night in Las Vegas. Five years later? Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a Main Era - the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run ... but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant.... History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of "history" it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time - and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened."
