Story Tools WASHINGTON (CNN) President Bush and first lady Laura Bush earned $771,940 in taxable income this past year and paid $268,719 in federal income taxes, the White House said Friday. Both figures are up from 2001, when the first family reported $711,453 and paid $250,221 in federal taxes. This past year's earnings included the president's $400,000 annual salary and income from trusts, the White House said. The Bushes donated $82,700 to churches and charitable organizations, ranging from donations to September 11 charitable funds, and to the Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas, and Southern Methodist University, Mrs. Bush's alma mater. Vice President Dick Cheney and Lynne Cheney made $945,051 in 2002 and got a tax refund of $95,858. The Cheneys had paid $436,972 in taxes through withholding and estimated tax payments, when it turned out they owed $341,114, his office said. The income included the vice president's $190,134 salary. In addition, Cheney earned $162,392 as a result of deferred compensation from when he headed Halliburton Company. In December 1998, Cheney deferred his 1999 salary as Halliburton chief executive, electing instead for it to be paid over five years, his office said.
Case Could Topple Tobacco Industry Arguments Against Cigarette Tax Evidence that tobacco companies may have assisted a huge cigarette smuggling operation is undercutting a traditional tobacco industry argument against cigarette taxes. http://healthwatcher.net/Smuggling/syr980607miller.html
Extractions: Syracuse, NY Herald American June 07, 1998 By John O'Brien, Staff Writer Evidence that tobacco companies may have assisted a huge cigarette smuggling operation on the Akwesasne Indian Reservation is fueling a Clinton administration attack on industry executives who oppose the president's plan for a dramatic increase in the U.S. cigarette tax. The administration has proposed hiking the tax on a pack of cigarettes by $1.10 as a way to curb smoking among teen-agers. Tobacco company officials argue such a tax in 7crease would create a huge black market similar to one that existed in Canada for several years before that country lowered its tobacco tax in 1994. "The illegal market becomes so efficient and robust that every thief sees a pack of cigarettes as ready cash," Steven Goldstone, chairman and chief executive officer of RJR Nabisco, said in a speech in April. "If Washington creates a raging black market for cheap cigarettes on street corners and in schoolyards, the people will be furious, and they will ask, just as they did in Canada: "How did we get ourselves into this terrible mess?"' But evidence that emerged in the Northern New York smuggling case could topple Goldstone's argument, White House officials say. The evidence suggests the black market may not have existed without tobacco industry help.

Richard Gephardt of Missouri emphasized their plans to create tax cuts for middle income Americans. Dean, who leads in numerous polls of Iowa voters, said he'll balance the federal budget and enact changes, including payroll tax cuts, that will bring financial relief to middle class families in other ways. First-term Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Bill Frist of Tennessee delivered the GOP response, sometimes citing personal experience for their disagreements with Clinton's proposals. In a text of the response released to the media early, Frist, a physician, indicated that health care would be among the first battleground issues in Congress.

Extractions: October 5, 2001 by Aaron Lukas In the wake of the recent terrorist attacks on the United States, domestic policy debates have understandably receded into the background. Unity and bipartisanship are the order of the day on Capitol Hill. The good feelings won't last forever, however, and so it's vital not to neglect domestic policy disputes that, though less visible, remain important. In other words, as we focus on America's enemies abroad, advocates of limited government must be more vigilant than ever here at home. The debate over Internet taxation is a case in point. When the Internet Tax Freedom Act expires later this month, Congress will likely feel compelled to do something Of course, such shaky justifications don't carry much weight with the general public or the business community, both of which rightly suspect that politicians already have plenty of money to carry on the legitimate functions of government. Consequently, the pro-taxers usually resort to the nuclear bomb of the Internet tax debate: the "level playing field" argument. Both groups have a point. In a perfect world, tax policy would be absolutely neutral and, while we're musing about perfection, tax rates would only be high enough to fund essential government services. But in the real world, of course, all things
Social Security Reform Center Without reform, Social Security will have insufficient funds to pay benefits in the future. Can payroll taxes be turned into wealth? http://www.socialsecurityreform.org/index.cfm
Extractions: Many concerned Americans and responsible lawmakers are starting to discuss openly the need for significant reforms in the Social Security retirement program. Their discussions reflect the rising level of concern across the country, especially among younger workers, that Social Security will not be able to provide them with promised benefits when they retire. This public concern is well grounded; studies and official reports confirm that Social Security cannot be sustained in its current form and, even if its revenue and expenditures were in long-term balance, it is providing poorer and poorer retirement income security for the money contributed by today's workers. Nevertheless, it is all too easy to grandstand on the issue of Social Security, obscuring facts and distorting the potential effects of suggested reforms. Therefore, as Social Security reform options are considered over the next few months, here are some key facts to remember:
Extractions: Languages Time, Inc. Time.com People Fortune EW WASHINGTON If Sen. James Jeffords' expected defection from the Republican Party leads to a Democratic majority in the Senate, environmental regulations, education, a proposed income tax cut and the makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court could all hang in the balance. The switch would give Democrats a majority in the Senate for the first time since they lost it in the 1994 elections, elevating Sen. Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, to the post of majority leader with the ability to bring bills to the floor. Democrats would take over as chairmen of most committees. Jeffords' voting record shows that he frequently has voted with Democrats on high-profile issues. He supports abortion rights. Jeffords votes more often for environmental legislation and favors more education spending than many other Republicans, including President Bush. Democrats have quietly courted Jeffords in recent weeks, offering him the chairmanship of the Environment and Public Works Committee if he bolts the GOP, sources familiar with the discussions told The Associated Press.
