Perkins says the difference between whittling and woodcarving is visible on the surface of the completed project: whittling often leaves rough edges and knife marks, whereas woodcarving creates a more polished piece in which the knife marks aren't seen. He shares the three basic woodcarving cuts with What's Your Hobby? host Eric Boardman: The left-thumb push ( figure A ) is the most common cut. The left thumb is placed on the back of the knife's base for control and smooth cutting. The stop cut ( figure B ) can cut out shapes from central areas of the wood. The draw cut ( figure C ) uses short, choppy strokes near the end of a piece and is common in old-fashioned "whittling."

Today Chenmo Choe Phuntsok works tirelessly to train young Tibetans in the time-honoured tradition. The woodcarving students, like their counterparts in the thangka painting section, begin their training by drawing on paper. When their skills are sufficient they begin to draw simple designs on wood panels or beams prepared for carving. Once a design has been drawn onto the wood, the artist drills holes to allow use of a fret saw. This special saw, made of a scored wire held taut on a bamboo frame, enables the craftsman to saw in any direction to remove pieces of wood less than one square centimetre in size. Woodcarving - carving panels During training, each student makes his own set of tools that will remain with him for a lifetime. Whether working on soft pine or a much harder wood such as walnut, the artist must always keep his tools sharp so the finished carving is both precise and smooth. The woodcarvers make traditional and ceremonial carved furniture such as altars of all sizes, elaborate thrones, folding tables, and incense burners. When they are complete, wood carved pieces are polished in the old-fashioned method, or painted in the rich colours of the Tibetan tradition. Some are also embellished with gold leaf.

They were crafted in Europe at the turn-of-the-century, most likely by German or Austrian artisans. The fire destroyed most of these carvings, with the worst damage occurring in the Grand Hall where the Christmas tree stood. The burned carvings were sent to Agrell and Thorpe, Ltd., a Sausalito, California wood carving shop. According to master carver Ian Agrell, the replication of the Utah Governor's Mansion carvings constituted the largest wood carving project undertaken anywhere in the world in the past ten years. Agrell and Thorpe's 12 craftspeople spent close to 20,000 hours recreating the mansion's original carvings. Early on they discovered that modern tools could not improve on designs devised 100 years ago. They carefully examined the burned pieces, then copied the construction of each original carving exactly. The new carvings are nearly indistinguishable from the old. The firm also replicated stone carvings on columns on the upstairs south porch. As part of the mansion restoration, all interior surfaces had to be removed in order to clean soot and repair smoke damage. The unique ceiling plasterwork, however, was cleaned in place since it was determined that it could not be replicated. The exception was in the parlor where new plaster ceiling details had to be recreated based on historic photographs by Dick Cook and others working with Berger, Inc., of Salt Lake City.

    Extractions: This is another lavish book from the Antique Collector's Club publishers. If you are interested in Medieval furniture, you should get this book. Remember, the only medieval furniture surviving in any quantity is echlesiastic, so even if you are not interested in church furniture, it offers a vast store of information about the broader field of domestic furniture of the Medieval period. The book also includes some fabulous misericord photos, which since "The World Upside Down" book by Christa Grossinger has gone out of print, is about the only in print source of misericord pictures. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates fine carving and woodwork.
