Extractions: SIU School of Medicine has embarked upon a major task of evaluating and reorganizing its entire curriculum. An initial task force outlined recommendations to be used as guidelines for curriculum reorganization. The curriculum review process will be accomplished in three phases. The first phase organized study groups to review the current curriculum, to establish principles and future guidelines for a new curriculum, and to review the current literature to assess what other institutions are doing in curriculum reorganization. The results of these study groups are enclosed, and these reports should provide the background information for the second phase of the C2000 project. During this phase, design teams will focus on the various segments of the curriculum to develop time blocks, objectives, evaluation systems, faculty, and resources. No design team will work in isolation, as the results of each team effort will be integrated into the full four-year curriculum. The third phase will consist of an implementation phase scheduled to begin with the class entering the summer of 2000. During this phase, further teaching materials will be developed and applied into all levels of the curriculum.

Extractions: Source: Demographic and Health Surveys The population of the world surged from 2.4 billion in 1950 to 6.1 billion 50 years later, because birth rates remained high at the same time that death rates began to fall. The number of children that a couple will have is determined by many factors, including health, religion, culture, economic status, and the ability to have the number they wish to have. Many of these factors relate to the status of women the social, economic, and cultural circumstances of women in society and of individual women in different societies. Because these factors help determine the number, spacing, and timing of births, women's choices (or lack thereof) regarding childbirth directly affect population growth. Biological, cultural, and socioeconomic conditions together determine the number of children that a woman will have. These conditions influence her exposure to intercourse and her ability to conceive a child, as well as the number of children she may wish to have. Some factors include age at marriage, use of

This has to do with how Women's Studies as a discipline imagines its missions vis-a-vis the topics of our scholarship. I am a scholar of Girls' Culture, or Girls' Studies; I don't think it has a formal name yet, as it's rather new (less than a full decade). It's an interdisciplinary field. There is a good body of work growing in the Soc. Ophelia_). On the Humanities side, much of the work being done is sort of an amalgam of history and popular culture and/or media (think of Sherrie Inness I work in the popular-culture channel, with a historical slant.
