Hoe ziet de literatuur tot dusver de relatie van stromingen als de theosofie tot politiek? Ten eerste ziet men de occulte zienswijzen van theosofen vaak als politiek irrelevant. Dit blijkt o.a. uit de geringe aandacht die zij tot dusver in de politieke geschiedschrijving kregen. Ten tweede worden ze in het bijzonder met de politieke linkerzijde in verband gebracht: James Webb associeerde occultisme met 'Nationalisms, Socialisms.' Daniel Bell verbond zonder onderbouwing 'gnostisch esoterisme' en 'anarchisme'. Auteurs, zowel links als rechts in het politieke spectrum staand, en zowel voor- als tegenstanders van de TV, brachten vaak een van deze twee standpunten naar voren. Na mijn onderzoek moet ik beide in twijfel trekken. Daarbij beperk ik het voor veel interpretaties vatbare 'nationalisme' tot dat in een situatie van koloniaal bestuur.

Extractions: University of North London Introduction After a period of political oblivion, the religious right in Bangladesh has not only made electoral gains but also successfully engaged in political alliances which allowed it to campaign virtually unopposed for an Islamic state where women could step outdoors only at their own peril. The many speared campaign has targetted development organisations which empower women through offering loans, skills training and employment opportunities. It is argued that female emancipation is not part of God's plan. Schools for girls have not remained unscathed. Women who dared to challenge existing social codes, alongside those who did not have been equally victims of violence and moral censure. These activities are at odds with the development objectives of the state. Yet, at times the role of the state has been an ambivalent one. Where decisive action could have stemmed the tide, none was forthcoming. This paper seeks to examine the position and status of women in Bangladesh in relation to the interplay of religion and politics. In order to do so it will first present some relevant backgound information on the history of the country and recent data on socio-economic indicators of female status. A discussion of the nature of women's subordination and resistance follows: the women's movement, though weak, has achieved some success in negotiating policy changes at the state level. Therefore, its interactions with the state merits some attention. An assumption shared by feminist scholars is that the postcolonial state reinforces gender inequality and sanctions injustices against women.

Support for Bush on virtually every aspect of the Iraq conflict has declined in the past month as the administration has battled insurgents and grappled with the expanding investigation into the treatment of Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison.

In this respect, Elizebeth Dole and Hillary Clinton are much alike. However, the Republicans have strongly criticized Hillary over issues involving her role as first lady and being the wife of the president. So the Bob Dole family is faced with the issue of what to do about Libby Dole. To be consistent with Republican expectations and to differentiate himself from his opponent, Bob Dole is forced to treat his wife differently than Bill Clinton. Clinton ran admitting his wife was smarter than he was. He said that she was a valuable asset to the country and would participate in government. His slogan was "Buy one, get one free." Bob Dole, on the other hand, has to show that he can "put the little woman in her place." So his wife has to play the subservient house wife who has no life of her own and is totally dedicated to her husband's opinion. While this role was fine for Barbera Bush, who was genuinely that way, Libby Dole is faking it. So what does it say about Bob Dole as a man when he has to attack his opponents wife to make himself look good? What does it say about Dole to force his wife to fake a role that just isn't her so as to satisfy the expectations of his right wing supporters. And it doesn't say a lot about Libby Dole's integrity do go along with this fraud. It raised the question; How long is she going to fake being stupid?
