Extractions: Endangered Species A medium-sized, wild canid, the red wolf resembles the coyote but is larger and more robust. Its legs and ears are relatively longer than the coyote's. The red wolf's coloration is similar to that of the coyote, but the tawny element is more pronounced, and the pelage is usually somewhat coarser. This species is slightly smaller than the gray wolf (C. lupus) with a more slender and elongated head. It's pelage is shorter and coarser than in any race of lupus. Prey studies in Texas and Louisiana, and more recent investigations in North Carolina, indicate that the diet of the red wolf will include whatever small to medium-sized mammals occur in abundance within the area in question. The last survivors in the wild in Texas and Louisiana fed primarily on nutria, rabbits, and carrion. Studies at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge indicate not only a wide range of smaller mammals found on the refuge, but also a heavy dependance on white-tailed deer by red wolfs released into the wild. Historical accounts indicate that prey could also include young calves and other smaller domestic animals.

To keep the population genetically healthy as it grows, zoos collaborate breeding efforts through an American Zoo and Aquarium Association Species Survival Plan (SSP). Wolves from the Species Survival Plan are selected for reintroduction into the wild. But before they go, they live in near-wild conditions in order to get used to living on their own. These most endangered of all wolf species were brought to the Zoo on November 13, 2003. There are approximately 100 Red Wolves left in the wild. Although much of the national publicity has examined wolf recovery in Yellowstone National Park, Idaho's successful reintroduction has occurred with relatively little notice and no law suits. Thirty-five wolves were brought into Idaho from Canada over the last two years. Three breeding pairs produced seven pups. The Nez Perce Tribe is orchestrating the recovery. The tribe succeeded after the state legislature reacted to political pressure and blocked the state's fish and game department from participating in reintroduction programs. The Tribe is in its third year of a programs that calls for monitoring, managing and researching the wolves. The recovery team also meets with ranchers, hunters and school children.

Now, with the overall prognosis looking better, Claudio Sillero, co-ordinator of the conservation programme, believes resources could be more effectively used if redirected towards combating rabies, improving protected area management and educating the people living in and near to the wolf range. Extractions: In the last few weeks there has been an outbreak of disease, confirmed as being rabies, among the Ethiopian wolves in the Bale Mountains. The Bale Mountains is home to the most important population of this endangered species that is endemic to Ethiopia. The current Ethiopian wolf population in Bale was estimated at 300 (of the global total estimate of 500) wolves. Since September 2003, 20 wolves have died in the Web valley within the Bale area. The Web valley is a critical core area that harboured an estimated 80 wolves prior to this crisis. The first possible case was a thin and weak wolf sighted by park staff in August 2003 some 35km from areas in which the wolves live. This sighting was thought to be a dispersing female - such as those that are periodically sighted some distance from established packs. The wolf disappeared before it could be examined by staff of the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme (EWCP). Wolves in the Bale Mountains are continually monitored by staff of the EWCP. The first suspicion that this was disease arose when four wolf deaths in the Web valley were reported on 09 October 2003. Since then, a further 16 wolves have been found dead in the same area.

In North America, the wolf has been exterminated from about 95 percent of its historic range in the United States, about 15 percent of its range in Canada, and all of its range in Mexico. Today the wolf has gone from about 25 percent of its original habitat in Europe and Asia. Human persecution and loss of habitat have restricted wolf populations to the more remote and wild lands of the Earth. From Persecution to Conservation Wolf conservation began in the 1960s with the global environmental movement, and today there is a growing atmosphere of acceptance as never before. Fortunately we know from successes in the western United States that wolves can be re-established and conflicts with humans can be minimized. We also know that where wolves have adequate prey and are protected from persecution, populations can quickly rebound.
