Extractions: Consider the following contradiction: A looming teacher shortage of catastrophic proportions has America's public education system frantic for a solution. In the next decade, nearly two million new teachers will be needed because of class-size reductions, teacher retirements, and enrollment increases. Yet resistance to the idea of privatizing or even loosening teacher certification-one of the main culprits in the teacher shortage-remains strong within the school system. This influential paper approved a column which argued for the significant regulation of homeschoolers. We believe that these types of articles are dangerous to the freedoms of homeschoolers in Wisconsin since they may encourage legislators to pursue homeschool regulations. We will therefore continue to closely monitor the Wisconsin legislature. If harmful legislation is introduced we can act to defeat it quickly.

ONLINE SERVICES A record number of Wisconsin teachers earned the prestigious National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification this year. Seventy teachers earned certification, bringing the state's total of board-certified teachers to 204. "They dedicated hours of their own time throughout the certification process reflecting on their practice and improving their effectiveness as educators. These talented educators do everything in their power to ensure that their students have the benefit of a classroom that works." Under PI 34, the state's teacher-licensing law, National Board-certified teachers can apply for the highest level of license, the Master Educator. Both the certification and license are valid for 10 years and can be renewed. The process of board certification which can take up to three years to complete, measures a teacher's practice against rigorous standards.
