Extractions: Businesses and industries recycle these materials plus a host of others, turning what would have been trash into a valuable economic resource. Their efforts to reduce waste and reuse resources on top of recycling add further benefit to the bottom line. In Wisconsin, we take pride in the fact that our state recycling program, enacted nearly 15 years ago, has matured to the point that it's now a major contributor to our state's economy and a part of our citizens' everyday lifestyle. Through the combined efforts of individuals, business, industry and government at all levels, we've been able to avoid building the equivalent of a new landfill or landfill expansion every two years. What's more, we are protecting our environment and preserving natural resources while making a positive contribution to the state economy. Wisconsin's recycling activity directly supports over 30,000 jobs, with an annual payroll of over $1 billion.
