Extractions: Larzelere SchoolAntigo, Langlade, Wisconsin The Kansas Heritage Server would like to thank Jeanne Bloom (jebloom@mcs.net) for contributing this material. I am late to this discussion, but had a great newspaper piece from Wisconsin that I thought Rene might find of interest. My own experience with one-room school houses was in the mid-60s in Allen County. Although I was from the "city", our 4-H club met at Prairie Dell School, a one-room school house southeast of Iola and across from the airport. I believe Prairie Dell was in operation until the State mandated unified school districts and the students were bused into town. Hope that you find this of interest and I will keep my eyes open for any other one-room school house information. The Antigo Daily Journal, Antigo, Wisconsin, May 18, 1935, page 5 Back in 1871, six years before F. A. Deleglise located the site of Antigo, Henry Larzelere, a lumber cruiser, drove a team of horses down the old military road in the eastern part of the county and built a dwelling house and hotel on the banks of the Wolf river at what is now known as Langlade. Today that building is still standing, being occupied now by the Harry Gelb grocery store and tavern. It is the oldest dwelling still standing in Langlade County, and one of the oldest in this part of the state.

Extractions: Special Education Advocacy and Consulting Alliance Frustrated ADHD and the Military by Annette Lansford, M.D., Champaign-Urbana, IL Can Our ADHD Patients Get In (and stay in) the Military? Two million young men and women have joined the military since the all-volunteer corps was established in the early 1970s. Many of them are attracted by the challenges, opportunities, and structure offered by the Armed Forces. Since there has been no military draft in this country for over 30 years, the branches of the Armed Forces are smaller and more highly selective. The downsizing of the military and the increasing technological skills required of the recruits has highlighted the military policy on ADHD. Adolescents frequently ask their pediatricians whether they can get into the military if they are taking Ritalin (or another ADHD medication). Young adults with ADHD receive inconsistent information on this question from their military recruiters. The lack of consistency across the branches of the military on this issue makes it difficult for the pediatrician to give correct and informed advice to his or her patients. A search of the pediatric and general medical literature on this topic came up with essentially nothing other than an excellent article by William Hathaway, Ph.D., entitled "ADHD In the Military" in the October, 1997, ADHD Report Newsletter, edited by Russell Barkley, Ph.D.

Extractions: Printer Friendly Version E-Mail This Article Published on Saturday, January 17, 2004 by the Boston Globe Facing Questions, Clark Backs Army School by Joanna Weiss CONCORD, N.H. Retired General Wesley K. Clark sometimes downplays his Army background, and criticizes the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays. But there is one military institution he vigorously defends: the controversial academy once known as the US Army School of the Americas. Opposition to the school, which trains military officers from Latin American countries, has long been a cause celebre among some Democrats and liberal activists, who say the academy has trained some of the most notorious criminals of the region and teaches skills that Latin American armies sometimes use against their own citizenry. Supporters of the school point to reforms from the 1990s, and say its courses teach foreign soldiers about democracy and human rights. Also See:

Extractions: Capt. Mark Hayry, 1st Battalion, 377th Field Artillery Regiment , a unit from Fort Bragg, N.C., attached to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) here, has worked with the Ihlaila primary school, three miles down the road from his battalion's tactical operations center, since early summer. The school was ruined by years of neglect under Saddam Hussein's regime. Under the division's Commander's Emergency Relief Program, the school was brought back to life in July with $8,000 in coalition funds. The students returned to a new school Oct. 1 with nearly double the past enrollment. Hayry's mother, Pam, is a teacher at the Spencer Public Schools, where all grades are in a single two-story building. She and the captain's father, Bruce, the town's postmaster, went to work rounding up supplies when their son told them about the impoverished school. "The school project was mentioned in church the following Sunday, and on Monday (my mother) received a phone call from a local newspaper. The paper interviewed her about the school project and immediately after the paper was published, collection boxes were set up in all the local banks in Spencer, (and the surrounding towns of) Marshfield, Colby, Abbottsford and Unity," Hayry said. Local churches also began collecting items for the school. The women of United Methodist Church in Spencer made more than 130 tote bags for the students.
